Re: Could KC host the FIFA World Cup?
I don't think there's a good chance that games would be split between locations in the same metro - Dallas games would be either at the Cotton Bowl (if it's still operational in 8-12 years) or the new stadium. In the press conference, it was also noted that Soldier Field had a rather small capacity and that Chicago reps were very preoccupied with their Olympic bid. They also insinuated that SF/Oakland lacked acceptable stadia.shaffe wrote: I think the Cotton Bowl was only involved because it is in Dallas, where the main draw is clearly Jerry World. Dallas will probably get a good number of games split between the two. Keep in mind the list was 18 cities, not 18 stadiums.

so is there still a chance they cut 6 more cities to cut down on travel costs? That's what someone on another site posted

Re: Could KC host the FIFA World Cup?
Ultimately FIFA is going to want to go with 8-10 venues for the actual World Cup, but the FIFA bid accepts a maximum of 18 cities, so we're in the bid. Still a long way to go to actually have a game.KCPowercat wrote: so is there still a chance they cut 6 more cities to cut down on travel costs? That's what someone on another site posted

so actual next step is usa getting 18 or 22 right? I have to think our capacity is a big draw.

Re: Could KC host the FIFA World Cup?
During the announcement, the guy said we have an average of 78K per game capacity - which is unprecedented. Said there would be 5 million tickets available (not sure how the math works out on that) - which would be 33% bigger than 1994. Not sure how it compares to other countries in recent years.KCPowercat wrote: so actual next step is usa getting 18 or 22 right? I have to think our capacity is a big draw.
If it doesn't have street-level retail, it's an abortion.

I'm pretty surprised Chicago and San Francisco were left out.... shocked more like it.
Awesome that KC is on the bid though!

KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.
Think on the Regional scale.

From the sounds of the press conference, Chicago had problems getting the bid together after the Olympic failure, and their venues were barely adequate. Venues were the issue with the SF/Oakland area too.ComandanteCero wrote: I'm pretty surprised Chicago and San Francisco were left out.... shocked more like it.

In 1994 Soldier Field II was deemed an acceptable venue for the WC but now the new and improved Soldier Field III is not. Too few seats, I suppose.staubio wrote: From the sounds of the press conference, Chicago had problems getting the bid together after the Olympic failure, and their venues were barely adequate. Saw our 94 Cup games in Chicago and it wasn't a bad experience.
Too bad. Chicago was a good host city.

I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

Their loss is our gain...Chicago can't get EVERYTHING for the Midwest, glad we got it.

It's over - US withdrew the bid for the 2018 World Cup when it became clear FIFA preferred Europe.

Good to hear....hence the "it's over" isn't really accurate.

Re: Could KC host the FIFA World Cup?
I was reading the wiki page about this (yeah, I realize the source material may not be accurate) and it said the host cities will be announced on Dec 2nd, which is less than two weeks away. I realize our chances are slim to none, but if we did get named as hosts, what would we need to do as a city to get ready for an event like this? Do we think anyone would use this as a campaign item, in some way, in the upcoming mayoral election? I realize that the event is basically 12 years away and it might be too early, but you never know.
I also noticed that (per wiki) that we were the only US city that hasn't hosted a major event before. Not sure if that would hurt or help us.

Final Four, World Series, MLB All-Star Game, and Republican Convention. Not exactly devoid of experience in hosting.splash wrote: I was reading the wiki page about this (yeah, I realize the source material may not be accurate) and it said the host cities will be announced on Dec 2nd, which is less than two weeks away. We have central location and good venues on our side. Hope we make the cut.
