I don't really understand why the Star would want to build a new press. Print papers will be gone in less than a decade. Are they setup for other types of print?

I know that regardless of how digital everything goes, the daily paper is one thing that I will always want as a "paper". Sure, I read KC Star stuff online all the time etc, but I still want my hard copy. I hope I'm not alone.beautyfromashes wrote: I don't really understand why the Star would want to build a new press. Print papers will be gone in less than a decade. Are they setup for other types of print?

Print isn't going anywhere. It was supposed to disappear when radio came along, just as TV was supposed to replace radio.

once everyone has a computer we will be a paperless society.beautyfromashes wrote: I don't really understand why the Star would want to build a new press. Print papers will be gone in less than a decade.
by 1985 automobiles will be obsolete and we will get around in flying cars. jetson style.
after the war called "the war to end all wars", everyone will get along and war will cease to exist.

As your avatar shows, newspapers will go nowhere until someone finds an efficient way to use a computer in the john. Even stormtroopers still read the paper.KC0KEK wrote: Print isn't going anywhere. It was supposed to disappear when radio came along, just as TV was supposed to replace radio.

Re: OFFICIAL - KC Star Printing Press
weren't we supposed to be moving to a paperless office also? That hasn't happened. PDA sales are slipping, and paper organizers are as popular as ever. Newspapers will be around for quite a while.
Are you sure we're talking about the same God here, because yours sounds kind of like a dick.

Yeah, I just don't understand getting the paper. First of all it's more than half coupons and advertisements. It's a huge waste of paper and energy, AND you have to pay for it as opposed to getting it free online. Sure doesn't make sense. I guess you old boomer farts will be pushing sales for awhile. Wonder what your legacy is really going to be anyway.

Re: OFFICIAL - KC Star Printing Press
Well, coupons and ads are part of the reason I get the newspaper. I also prefer to read print whenever possible, even though I spend about 10 hours a day on-line doing research as part of my job. It's not as if I'm uncomfortable reading off of a screen than a piece of paper.
However, I've dropped all of my trade magazine subscriptions and now read them on-line. I don't see any reason to do that with newspapers and the non-work-related magazines that I subscribe to.

I get the paper daily and I'm far from an oldtimer. I enjoy reading the paper in print....I'm staring at my PC monitor enough already. The ads, etc. are part of the reason I get it. When done the papers are recycled so no impact on the environment from me.beautyfromashes wrote: Yeah, I just don't understand getting the paper. Re: OFFICIAL - KC Star Printing Press
agreed... i'm 27 and walking to the corner to get the paper, and then eating breakfast and drinking coffee while reading it, continues to be a tradtion. i especially like getting the paper on the weekend because i will lounge around for a good part of the day and read it wherever i feel like it, which i certainly can't do with my computer. besides i stare at a screen all day at work anyway...KCPowercat wrote: I get the paper daily and I'm far from an oldtimer. i do find it amusing that i'm reading an article online from the Washington Post about declining newspaper circulation. but no bother, i'll continue to get the physical paper when i have a chance.

I took a tour of the new presses today. The building is awesome and has great views of the skyline. The room that will hold 2,700 rolls of 2,000# paper was impressive. The outside looks nicer than the new additions to the Nelson-Atkins in my opinion. The Star's circulation is holding its own. 25% of the Star's revenue is generated from subscriptions.

Re: OFFICIAL - KC Star Printing Press
I'm not old, and I still get The Star everyday. Those coupons come in handy! It also gives me a chance to read things that I normally wouldn't be interested in (like when I'm straining on the pot). Plus I don't enjoy being online 24x7. Â

Somehow I doubt the Star would invest 250+ million in a new building if they didn't expect their investment to pay off. . . .
But I guess if print does become obsolete, the building can always be converted to an indoor tropical zoo. I'm sure a residential tower or two could be built on the south half.

Re: OFFICIAL - KC Star Printing Press
i was told today that the new plant should be up in january. we will start off slow with the production of the comics and the home section which are currently printed at our sister paper in wichita.
have also heard from the g-vine that the commercial orders are coming in fast and furious.
we start the first series of training classes for our 11 crews next week. it will last for a week until all crews go through it and then start again with a new area. the first set of classes is called "offset theory".
