Re: Generic ongoing KCATA thread
I don't know the whole story, but feel kinda bad for the KCATA guy. Maybe he's a nutjob but I've always found his enthusiasm for public transit to be refreshing and as someone with disabilities he brings a great perspective toward ridership options.

He's not a but job at all lol. His ideas may be a bit strange, but he's got the right motives and has tried to make moves to get us closer to region cooperation.
Meanwhile, KCMO is going to casually withhold funding because they can't pillage ATA funding whenever they feel like it.

What's their issue with the incentives vehicle?normalthings wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 7:12 am CEO to be fired. Star touches on why but arguements over service during COVID, city redirecting kcata funds for street lights, and the new incentives vehicle are the three leading causes

KCMO and KCPS don't like that KCATA can offer incentives and not be subject to the stringent rules that KCMO currently requires. KCPS feels that it is hurting their bottom line.AlkaliAxel wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 6:14 pmWhat's their issue with the incentives vehicle?normalthings wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 7:12 am CEO to be fired. Frankly, it's rather funny, KCMO is fighting for it's right to control it's police force from the state, because they think they can manage it better (they probably can), yet have been pulling this nonsense and short-changing the KCATA for years. Now they've just resorted to strong-arming KCATA for money.

Apologies for the mistake there, but either way, KCMO is really over-stepping their boundaries here. Though, I would've liked to have seen KCATA call their bluff and see if KCMO would actually go with a new operator for transit.

Is KCATA good at getting development projects through?SilentSpades24 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 9:13 pm Apologies for the mistake there, but either way, KCMO is really over-stepping their boundaries here. Re: Generic ongoing KCATA thread
I wouldn't know, It seems they're trying to take on look similar to PortKC.
Makinen has said he wants ATA to be more than a bus company, and they're clearly trying to get into the development management game.
I have a funny feeling that if Makinen is tossed, somehow his replacement won't be as ambitious.....

Re: Generic ongoing KCATA thread
More like he didn't let KCMO steal more money from the budget, aside from the money they already steal. KCMO didn't like being told they can't steal more funds to fund their own city projects. KCMO and the ATA board pretty much told him "Leave or be removed".

Please take two seconds to look back or read an article on Google before posting. Very frequently you ask a question you can find the answer to in 30 seconds or less on your own.

Lol, stop trying to copy Chris lmao. And you're way off base with what I'm referring to here. I know the story with Makinen. But they just approved two new incentive packages today, and then he quit. I just think that's interesting. And wondering if he was trying to get those done on his way out.normalthings wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 9:09 pmPlease take two seconds to look back or read an article on Google before posting. Re: Generic ongoing KCATA thread
https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/kans ... or-successBesides the increased mobility and financial benefits, nearly 80% of the residents surveyed also said Zero Fare increased their sense of safety on the bus. That points to one of the more counterintuitive benefits of eliminating fares: The buses became safer to ride.
“Some operators would beg to differ with us, and some operators feel like it doesn’t seem right that people are riding longer than they would if they actually had a destination,” says Cindy Butler, interim vice president for marketing and communications at the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). “But statistics show that actual incidents where supervisors have to be called [to quell a disturbance on a bus] have actually gone down.” Many of those incidents concerned passengers who either could not afford to or refused to pay fares.
Indeed, the total number of incidents where supervisors were called fell 39% in the first year of full Zero Fare transit, according to a 2021 Zero Fare impact analysis by the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), the Kansas City area’s metropolitan planning organization. Incidents per 100,000 riders fell 17%.
Good article. Wasn't expecting the results from the question on "sense of safety".

Some more information on this question. Looks like they plan to continue the program. However, Mayor Q would like a “limiting scope”
