A zoning change in CP to build a vet clinic was approved in committee today.
One story building located at NE corner of 5th and Holmes. Half of the frontage on 5th street slated to be a fenced dog park/run.

Nice looking building. Not very exciting having a dog run next to a sidewalk on 5th though. This has been in the works for awhile, almost thought it was dead.

Re: Columbus Park Redevelopment
Friend sent me a post from Columbus park neighborhood that Edward Franklin is presenting to the neighborhood this week about redeveloping the rest of the land around CP Lofts. I think that was all a port KC project?

No, it's LCRA. It's a complicated clusterfuck. The remaining 6 acres to the east (where the DIY skatepark is) is owned by HAKC.KCPowercat wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 7:46 pm Friend sent me a post from Columbus park neighborhood that Edward Franklin is presenting to the neighborhood this week about redeveloping the rest of the land around CP Lofts. Re: Columbus Park Redevelopment
This building at 1050 E 5th St. in Columbus Park was recently listed for sale: ($435k)
What's interesting is that the listing includes this photo:
Does anyone know this history here? Was the building shortened, or the top brickwork removed and put onto a different building? Or was it just modeled after this building?

Weird looks like the exact same building. I do love that building always thought it would be good as a coffee shop

Re: Columbus Park Redevelopment
The parapet modeled after the original was added sometime between 2012 and 2014. The first level is definitely older construction so possibly original. Maybe the upper floors were lost in a fire.

Many of you may not know this, but this building was the former Columbus Park Social Club--aka "The Trap," and was the epicenter of the Civella family crime syndicate for many years.Patrick Reaves’ law practice is based in the Livestock Exchange Building in Kansas City’s West Bottoms. It include one other lawyer and a paralegal.
He bought the building at 1050 E. 5th Street in the Columbus Park Urban Renewal Area in 2007. The building once had four stories, but is down to one story due to a fire that occurred before Reaves bought it.
“The building actually has a really rich history connected to organized crime,” Reaves said. “When you look at the list of owners, several were linked to organized crime.”

The Trap! Infamous building. Really unfortunate it lost the upper floors, but happy it still exists.
Would recommend reading Mobsters in our Midst by William Ousley for a great overview of the Civella family and River Quay days...

^ Me, too, but it's a weird location with highway wrapping around nearly half of it.
