Obviously a regional transit levy would be ideal for bus/streetcar development.

That would be a yuge ask for those out in JoCo if a penny of their $ went into a project not directly connecting to their own subdivision. . .

List of 'free to ride' transit in US. A few small towns have city wide free service but not any large cities I can find in US. Most are just specific point to point shuttles or certain districts like KC's streetcar. Seattle used to have free bus service from anywhere in King Co into downtown until 2012 if I understand right.

That's the conventional wisdom, which isn't always reality: https://www.jocogov.org/sites/default/f ... 0Final.pdf
Public Transportation.

Residents were asked to indicate their level of agreement with various statements related to public transportation services in the County. The major findings are listed below; the percentages shown only reflect the percentage of respondents who had an opinion about the service.

o 63% of residents agreed that the County should increase services for transportation for disabled populations
o 61% of residents agreed that the County should enhance transit availability and frequency along major corridors
o 59% of residents agreed that the County should increase services to provide adequate public transit to meet the needs of the community

More than half (56%) of the residents surveyed who provided a response indicated they were open to utilizing public transportation provided by Johnson County.

If this is a regional tax to provide free bus transit, I’m reluctantly for it. But, if this is KCMO paying the whole cost for a regional benefit...LIKE ALWAYS... I’m against it.

Thanks for providing that survey, although the question is pretty broad, theoretical question, surely it is a good sign if a new regional transit levy would ever be put to a vote. Such funding would be able to cover a free, expanded bus system that perhaps would be augmented slowly with increased rail if demand is there. There is no way any kind of rail along I-35 corridor to JoCo; KCI, Truman Sports would work without a regional funding system. I also would say that the Streetcar starter line has demonstrated that (sometimes even before funding is secured), developers will invest and build denser TOD projects along such corridors. I'm unsure if any other private developers are as inclined to do so in an purely bus transit development unless heavily subsidized by the government. (As a side note, the East Village transit hub could provide a catalyst for development, but unsure how much of that would be directly tied to that transit hub or if just due to the fact that the location is central and that it is already in a previously TIF district).

Obviously you, the city of KCMO/RideKC/MARC, know this and wouldn't be surprised if they are working towards this slowly, once some of these major urgent priorities (Buck bridge, Rivefront expansion, Fed funding for Streetcar Plaza Expansion) worked out a bit more. In addition, the current Admin is very anti-transit and hopefully the tarriffs etc will blow over and costs will drop a bit in the next 10 years.

I don't envy them if this is something they are thinking about, just because the recent approvals of the GO bonds were not insignificant property tax increases, and sales taxes are already high, especially when factoring in various CIDs/etc. These does make proposing additional taxes of any kind any easier.

Plus there's already a dedicated transit sales tax citywide. Is there an estimate on what expanding this tax to five counties would bring in?

Lots to unpack here, with KCATA's CEO talking very openly to The Star's Glenn Rice:

I think he wanted to come off as passionate, but I thought he was going to start flipping over tables. Poor Glenn got yelled at for half an hour. :)

Does this mean the encroaching lawns will finally get kicked off?

Yes, assuming an appeal is not filed or successful.

There's encroachments up and down the cooridor. In one place there's a garage 100% on KCATA land. That said, the property line zig zags and most owners at least stick to the same straight line.

DeJanes is who decided to ignore this to the most extreme and have a back yard that goes even deeper into the park than anyone else.

The city didn't sue. The KCATA did. The Trolley Track Trail isn't legally speaking a public park.

All KCATA buses are free to ride today, including KS side. Give it a try if you've never ridden a bus.

Use Google Maps to set destination and click on the transit icon. It will show buses coming to nearest stop that will take you there.
