This is how you make the case for how the city funds a convention hotel.Because 28 percent of Cordish’s customers come from 100 or more miles away, conventions and leisure tourism are a critical piece of the pie. But while convention business is improving again, “It’s not where it could be,” Benjamin said. “We firmly believe that can be changed with one step: the addition of a downtown convention center hotel.”
Such a move, he said, could increase district sales by more than 20 percent. Weekly sales during citywide conventions are historically 100 percent higher than the district’s 52-week average.

Depends on what subsidy the hotel requires. Does it make sense to double down on a flat industry when it's not a sure thing that it will eliminate the recurring debt payments for P&L?

Not really. If you look at the total amount of "city" sales taxes for the year for the district you will see that the impact would not be that great. This is how you make the case for how the city funds a convention hotel.

Interesting article. Anyone notice that it says retail is planned for One Light? I believe 2,500 square feet is what it said. I could have sworn there was no retail planned. This is very awesome if so.
No sense in not stacking retail here. This is a major intersection in the middle of downtown. With no retail on this corner, there would only be one corner on this intersection with retail. I hope someday they will add retail to the north east corner, where the garage is. Add something kind of like the Arvest Bank corner. And have it go all the way up to the Meyers music building. Someday I would also like to see retail continue up the ground floor of this garage on Grand. There should really be retail on all sides of it. Maybe we could even make the garage look less garage-y at that point.
