There quite a few evening special events, though. My daughter and I went to the luminaria walk on Thanksgiving weekend. And my husband and daughter went to the Chinese New Year celebrations that were in the evening.

They are also set to have an exhibit on the original rules of basketball. So any KU haters that want a chance to see them in a non-hostile environment, this is your chance.

Would not the original rules be better exhibited dt at the College Basketball Experience? What has this to do with art?

It probably has more to do with the fact that the Nelson is better prepared to handle pricey artifacts such as this. Also, I doubt the CBE would be able to run a timed exhibit in a closed environment. It would be pretty great if they could bring them in for the Big XII tourney, but I would be wary of displaying them for so many drunk people.

B) The Nelson holds a lot of historical pieces that probably would not be considered works of art, even in a decorative fashion, at the time. Hell, my favorite piece there is practically one big set of tax laws put on stone.
C) Cynically, you could see possibly it as a way to attract a wider audience. Though, I would consider it still done in a relatively classy manner.
I wonder how they will close the rest of Kirkwood Hall off though.

"On the acquisitions front, Marion and Henry Bloch made it official that they will be giving their Impressionist collection to the Nelson. And thanks to the Hall Family Foundation, the museum has commissioned a 60-foot-tall stainless-steel tree from New York sculptor Roxy Paine for the sculpture park."

That sounds very impressive. They have one here in DC, but it is 30 feet tall at the most. 60 feet tall!!? That is really going to make an impact on the lawn. Can't wait!
The tree has been "planted" and it looks incredible! The installation isn't completely done, but it's worth a drive-by.

Re: Nelson Atkins - Moving Forward
I went to the John Vanderslice concert on Friday and was able to speak with him and his crew after the show (side note, I didn't "know" anyone... he is just a really nice guy). His tour manager and drummer both went to the Nelson the day of the show and said it was the best free museum they had ever been to. I realize how amazing a museum it is, but it is nice now and again to have outsiders verify that it isn't just nice for Kansas City; it is impressive to any lover of art museums.

I was initially excited about this competition, but I have to admit I'm pretty underwhelmed at the finalists - the non-finalist submissions must've been pretty bad. Granted $20K isn't much to work with, but c'mon!FangKC wrote:Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art picks five finalists to build pavilion

Design for Nelson pavilion combines art and interaction
Called “Sun Pavilion,” Generator’s plan combines art, public engagement, design simplicity and solar power.
Incorporating three standard shipping containers and an open-air series of angular canopies made of solar panels, the project will be built on the south end of the museum grounds. Highly visible along Cleaver Boulevard, the pavilion also will serve to extend the reach of the exhibit, “Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs: 1851-1939,” providing spaces for supplementary material, educational information and interaction.

I'm all for vernacular architecture and building with a sense of place, but every time I see the Bloch building I wish it didn't look exactly like a pole barn. It's a nice exhibit space inside and at night it looks good all lit up like a paper lantern, but during the day, ugh. My parents' neighbor keeps his farm trucks in one just like it.
