I wonder why that is though.chrizow wrote: how many people in KC really have that kind of dough? KC's old money families (the Kempers, Blochs, Halls, Helzburgs, etc.) don't seem interested in such things and the new money (Min Kao, who else?) don't either.

Re: NHL OR NBA, let the message board decide!!
Lots of possible reasons. They might view pro sports as a money pit, not just for the owner but also for the community (e.g., the periodic threat of moving unless a new facility is built). Or they might have only a casual interest in sports and would rather donate to something that they feel more passionate about (e.g., the arts). Or they might not want the public spotlight that comes with owning a franchise.KCMax wrote: I wonder why that is though.
Or they might be satisfied with the amount of national exposure that they get from their companies. Historically a lot of successful businesspeople bought pro sports franchises because they wanted to have their name known on a national level instead of being just a big fish in their small, local pond (in terms of geography or industry). If it weren't for pro sports, how many people outside of the shipbuilding and Internet industries would know who George Steinbrenner and Mark Cuban, respectively, are?

Okay Kemper Arena for DL Team.
Soon or later KC or St. Louis or OkKCity or Memphis will get a WNBA Team maybe because the Midwest needs another team other then Tulsa and San Antoino.

Olathe was a option before the KC Sporting decide to build in KCK.
But I think he can't keep it.

There is a guy in Olathe with a really sweet backyard court. Its lit and everything. Its only half court, but it would be really hard for a WNBA team to pass up the chance to use it as their home arena.TheSmokinPun wrote: I even hear they want to put it in Olathe too!

NBA gives the Kings an extension for relocation.

Meanwhile, are we doing anything?Johnson, who also was in attendance, said he plans to meet with the Maloofs and speak with Stern again this week. Johnson said he already has spoken with Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and it was clear that the Southern California city is making a hard push for the Kings.

I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

I'd like for KC to make a run for the Atlanta Thrashers. We'd come down from Omaha a ton to watch the NHL.

A Toronto writer thinks we're no longer being considered for an NHL club.

My question is, why does this city not have any multi-rich? Most cities will have their old money billionaires or new economy startup money bags. There should be at least one megaconglomerate in this city that setup at multimillionaire or two.

I'm really suprised Warren Buffet has never bought a team. With all his money, he could buy all 30 NBA franchises to play in omaha and still have 30 billion leftover for himself.

"As an NHL landing place, Winnipeg comes with questions. Is it big enough? Rich enough? Viable enough with a slightly under-sized arena in its downtown core?
But here's the $165-million (US) question: where the heck else is the NHL going to plunk its Phoenix Coyotes? Kansas City has fallen off the list of possibilities. So that leaves, what, Houston, Portland, Seattle, Duluth, Minn.?"
Clearly the peice is an OPINION and not really based on fact. Not only that, but it's is a peice with snippets from another. Lame. The Pitch is garbage.
The only reason Kansas City would be off "the list" is there is no owner ready to bring a team here. Same with "Houston, Portland, Seattle, Duluth, Minn." Hell, throw Quebec in there along with Winnipeg. Until someone publically comes out in ANY city and states they want to bring a team to their town, then they are all in the same boat.
Dumb, worthless, tripe. Move on.

Probably because he believes that other investments offer a better return.brewcrew1000 wrote: I'm really suprised Warren Buffet has never bought a team.
That could be because it's one thing to throw a million or three at each cause and quite another to shell out $50 million, $100 million or more to own all or part of a franchise. And like Buff, they also might view pro sports as a poor investment.brewcrew1000 wrote: The Hall's, Kemper's and Bloch's are old money with deep pockets but they seem to invest more in the arts rather then sports

I think it would be a great investment for them. How many people around the country have never heard of the families mentioned but would know who Mark Cuban, Dan Snyder or the Madoffs are simply because of their purchases of professional sports franchises. So, you get a pretty sure bet investment plus improved marketing of yourself and your core business.KC0KEK wrote: That could be because it's one thing to throw a million or three at each cause and quite another to shell out $50 million, $100 million or more to own all or part of a franchise. Cuban and Snyder are not famous because they own sports teams. They're famous because they're media/attention whores and can't keep their mouths shut. Owning a franchise was just the most convenient way to have media on-hand to record for posterity every douchy thing they do.beautyfromashes wrote: I think it would be a great investment for them. And neither of their teams have won jack shit.
