Features should never be named after extant people. Although I find Bond a perfectly respectable and successful senator, you never know when decisions as such will be an embarassment (some of you may remember Paige arena in Columbia?). Anyway, once I called something "Paseo Bridge" for decades, I really doubt if I would ever change. 47th street east of the Plaza is still 47 street to me and not Cleaver Blvd.DaveKCMO wrote: missed this not-at-all-surprising tidbit in collison's article monday:

Me too. Changing names of structures only confuses people.chrizow wrote: i will call it the paseo bridge until the day i perish.

Much to my chagrin, Royals Stadium has certainly become The K. Not that Mr. Kauffman wasn't a great man, but it is Royals Stadium!

This is no surprise, but it is interesting that Kit Bond will probably be the only human with two Missouri River bridges named after him. The new bridge being built at Hermann is also The Christopher S. Bond Bridge. Oh, and it has a pesky little bike/ped lane.

MoDOT gets $1M federal grant for KC roads
The Missouri Department of Transportation received a $1 million federal grant for work on Kansas City roads.
The Federal Highway Administration awarded similar grants to six states earlier this week through its Highways for LIFE program, which grants money to states to build longer-lasting roads faster, MoDOT said in a release Friday.
MoDOT received the grant for its "innovative approach" to rebuild Interstate 29/35 from Route 210/Armour Road to the northeast corner of the downtown freeway loop, including a new Missouri River bridge. The $245 million kcICON project is one of three pilot design-build projects in the state and has a planned completion date of Oct. 31, 2011.
The design-build process is intended to speed project timetables and yield better projects for the money spent.
Two teams are competing for the project contract. One should be chosen in November, and major construction could start by the spring of 2008.

I love the new color of the Paseo bridge. KC Royals Blue. It is sharp versus the old silver.

Re: Bond Bridge (formerly Paseo)
modot has a new survey on its paseo bridge website: http://www.kcicon.org/
this survey is an opportunity to support an accommodation for walking / biking on the bridge.
it's also an opportunity to ask:
- that east-west streets be made more friendly to walkers and bikers,
- that public transit be included,
- that the entire corridor be made more attractive through landscaping and unique design features, and
- that they shouldn't even plan for four lanes each way but should instead put such additional capacity in some other corridor.

Bridge decision to have big impact on Isle of Capri Casino
A very uncertain future for Kansas City’s Isle of Capri Casino begins to unfold Nov. 14.
On that date the Missouri Department of Transportation will select and announce its contractor for a $245 million plan to upgrade four miles of Interstate 29/35, including the 50-year-old Paseo Bridge over the Missouri River.
For St. Louis-based Isle of Capri Casinos Inc., the key decision is whether the old bridge will remain open to traffic while a new structure is built alongside. The winning contractor could opt to rehabilitate the old bridge and incorporate it as part of a new structure.

The American Bridge/Walsh team's sole design-builder is American Bridge Co., based in Coraopolis, Pa., but it also includes Overland Park-based URS Corp. and Ideker Inc. of St. Joseph.
The Paseo Corridor Constructors comprises Kansas City-based Clarkson Construction Co. and Massman Construction Co., as well as Omaha-based Kiewit Western Co. Other participants are St. Louis-based Parsons Transportation Group Inc. and Kansas City-based TranSystems Corp.

Re: Bond Bridge (formerly Paseo)
due date for the proposals was october 24. modot will evaluate the two proposals and settle on a recommendation by the november 14 mhtc meeting when a decision will be announced.
part of the evaluation will be done by a community advisory group (cag) of about 10 members, which has been meeting with modot for the past year. (no transit, bike/ped, or environmental stakeholders were admitted into membership on that group.) the cag will award up to 10 points (out of a total of 100) to each proposal based on the design submitted for the bridge itself.
it's conceivable that a $245 million contract could be awarded based on the cag's preference for one bridge design over the other.
