Just wondering if anybody knows what is going in North of the closed Optical store/Gigis on 12th Street? I work in 1201 Walnut and noticed some surveyors walking around the area yesterday. Also, are they planning on keeping those buildings North of the soon to be demolished Danny Edwards?
This might be posted elsewhere, but I'm too lazy to scroll through all the topics
Thanks,

Probably starting work on the 12th Street streetscape improvements. Should be similar to the work being wrapped up near the Library. This was from an old email about a meeting proceeding the work:
The Capital Improvements Management Office of Kansas City, Missouri will be holding a property-owner stakeholder meeting for the 12th Street streetscape improvements project, which affects properties along 12th Street from Wyandotte to Locust. This meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28 at 2:00 p.m. and will be held in the Mayor’s Dining Room on the 8th Floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th Street.
City representatives and members of the project’s design team at BNIM Architects will be on hand to review the project designs, and to discuss the construction schedule and how it could potentially impact 12th Street properties. This meeting will allow the City to gather information on how to best coordinate with property owners as it begins to gear up for the construction, scheduled to start in early 2007.
If you have questions or concerns you wish to express prior to the meeting, please contact Marny Burke, Communications Specialist, at 816-513-2749 or marny_burke@kcmo.org

Thanks for the responses.....I really hope they don't leave that block a gravel lot, especially with the Sprint Center just South......a nice park there would be better than a gravel lot.

Where do you park your car? A garage? Sorry, they are needed...
Doesn't prove out what they will do with the 13/Grand block.
but, if you have some info you'd like to share, dish. I'm thinking you are just being your normal "bah humbug" self.
I never said they weren't needed. Just pointing out CWB has proposed other large projects that have gone nowhere, so it is a bit premature to expect something exciting here.
Is the Copaken building a go on the soon to be former Danny Edwards site? If they demo that building and the 2 adjacent buildings (gigi's) and leave nothing but a gravel lot, that will be a big eyesore for people visiting the Sprint Center. Hopefully plans are in the works for something cool....maybe the new convention center hotel that is being planned?

TIF commission owns everything on the block except the law building site, the wig place and the building where Jake's is. They have condemnation authority for the rest.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 4, 2007
Construction on 12th Street to start May 7
Construction will start May 7 on the City of Kansas City, Mo., 12th
Street streetscape improvement project. The Capital Improvements
Management Office is managing this $3 million project, which will affect 12th
Street from Wyandotte Street to Locust Street.
Construction will start on the north side of 12th Street at Baltimore
Street. Work will be complete on the north side of the street by the
beginning of August, and then will shift to the south side, starting again
at 12th Street and Baltimore Street. All construction for this project
is scheduled to be complete in conjunction with the opening of the
Sprint Center arena in early October. Additional work by Kansas City Power
& Light, Missouri Gas Energy and Trigen Energy Corporation will be
completed simultaneously to lessen inconvenience to area residents and
businesses.
During construction, 12th Street will be reduced to two lanes and
pedestrian access and on-street parking will be interrupted. Building access
will be maintained at all times during project construction. The
recommended detour to bypass this construction is to use eastbound 10th
Street.
This improvement project will serve as a prototype for future downtown
streetscape projects and will implement the City's Downtown Streetscape
Master Plan. Improvements will include landscaping, curb and sidewalk
replacement, and the addition of streetlights and pedestrian lights.
This project is designed to enhance the pedestrian environment and promote
usage of the bus transit system implemented by the Kansas City Area
Transportation Authority. The improved 12th Street corridor also will
connect the existing convention facility district with the new Power &
Light Entertainment District.
