Buck O'Neill International Airport
Just watched KC Week in Review and Nick Haines told me that there are some (Alvin Brooks chiefly) that want to rename KCI "Buck O'Neill International Airport."
As much as I like Buck, I vote a big no on that one.

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport
Bad idea....let's keep the name "Kansas City" as visible as possible. Only baseball afficiandos have even heard of Buck O'neill.

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport
what if the alternative were the Mary Kay Barnes International Airport? you know she'll get her name stamped on SOMETHING right after she leaves office... is the KCMO way!
i personally don't have a strong opinion about it. the new orleans airport is named after louis armstrong, which doesn't seems to raise many eyebrows. same for will rogers world airport in OKC. and it's not like anyone would call it that for a generation anyway since people would be hard-pressed to immediately switch away from "KCI" (kinda like "sandstone"). or maybe people would just start calling it "o'neill" and drop the rest... does anyone under 40 really remember the first names of o'hare , hartsfield, or laguardia?

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport
That is funny as most people at that point would wonder who the Irish-American was that KC named its airport after..........and I still here people refer to as MCI!!DaveKCMO wrote: or maybe people would just start calling it "o'neill" and drop the rest... does anyone under 40 really remember the first names of o'hare , hartsfield, or laguardia?

This would be an ideal Idea but we have to remember that the FAA has to aprove the name change of the airport. They might want to call it Lamar Hunt International instead.

he was a TEXAN! You can't do that. It's illegal.anniewarbucks wrote: This would be an ideal Idea but we have to remember that the FAA has to aprove the name change of the airport. They might want to call it Lamar Hunt International instead.

As much as I admired Hunt......you're right....if we have to name it after a person, let's find someone who at least lived in KC for a substantial portion of their lives.bbqboy wrote: he was a TEXAN! You can't do that. It's illegal.

Good god no. Hunt or O'Niell. Leave the airport as is. If anything change the code to KCI instead of MCI.anniewarbucks wrote: This would be an ideal Idea but we have to remember that the FAA has to aprove the name change of the airport. They might want to call it Lamar Hunt International instead.

I think a far more fitting tribute would be to build a world class baseball facility in the 18th and Vine District for baseball tournaments.

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport
Since light rail would finally go to the airport, shouldn't it be the Chastain International Airport? Wouldn't that be a fitting tribute to the city's latest hero? {cough}

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport
Well, just because a memorial name is given doesn't mean that the code has to change. San Jose's airport is called Norman Mineta Airport, or something like that, and the code is still SJC.
That said, I don't think it makes much sense to name an airport after someone that had little to do with it, and has no prior association with it.
But if they did rename it, I wouldn't be offended.

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport
Airports are e big enough deal they should be named after presidents. The only suitable name would be the Harry S. Truman International airport.
