Aviation Obstruction Beacons

Anyone know what agency would be in charge of enforcing the red lights on top of tall buildings?  City codes or the FAA?  My building is missing its beacon and I am not sure if it is legally required to have one.

I would start with the FAA.

Where is your building? Is there any buildings taller than yours around your area. I think that your building might have to have its top floor lights on at all times in leu of a becon light.

Defintiely start with the FAA.  The FARs (Federal Aviation Regulations) cover these types of things.  I don't recall specifics, but it has to do with height and distance from the airport, etc.

the only way you would absolutely know it's missing is if you have been on your buildings roof at night.

also it would have to be a fairly tall building to even need one. the new h&r block building has 4.

why do you even care if it has a light? are you scared that your building will get hit by a flying object?

try working in a building made of see thru glass that goes all the way down to street level that is owned by one of the most hated corporate hometown companies here in k.c. all the while knowing that 50 panes of glass have already been shot out in the last year and a half.

that will get you thinking when you're working on press 60.

Yes I have been on the roof many times.  They must have been torn out when the building was abandoned.  Yes, the building is the furthest north high rise in the loop and right along the flight path of prop planes. There have been many times when I have braced for impact when they graze close.  What does a question about beacon lights have to do about the Star Press Pavilion shot out windows?

r u talking about the old howard johnsons? i've sat up at the top room in meetings and it did indeed look like planes would fly right into you there. great views.

to answer your question. safety. i believe i have a much better chance of being shot while on my press than you have of a plane hitting your building. i would put my chances at 10,000-1. yours at least a billion-1.

but if you go by the "garp" rule, i might just be a lot safer where i'm at.
