Happy 143rd Birthday, State of Kansas (Jan 29, 1861)
Chouteau Village existed around across the river from the Ameristar Casino. We are talking about the real Kansas City.
Oh, and also, Kansa territory probably (most likely) is talking about the indian's territory. Which doesn't count obviously.
Kansas should have been named for something else, William Clarke Quantrill just wasn't using his brain at the time...

Lewis and Clark named it the Kansa Territory 50 years before KCMO was called Town of Kansas so everyone shut the fuck up with this copying off of KCMO shit.KCDevin wrote:Chouteau Village existed around across the river from the Ameristar Casino. We are talking about the real Kansas City.

Kansas was obviously named for the river, and the people who lived here. Maybe KCMO should have named itself after that big old Missouri River that flowed through it, rather than copying off of Kansas.

Ok, listen, nothing was named after KCMO, I never said that.
KCMO was called the Town of Kansas before anyone thought of calling the state of Kansas "Kansas". Also, Missouri City was already taken I believe and so was/is Missouri Town. Kansas became a state after KCMO was founded. It goes like this bud:
Kanza Indians
Kansa River
Town of Kansas
Kansas City
Kansas
Kansas City Kansas
Also, I would love it if you would stop your cursing, as the saying goes "Cussing is a feeble mind trying to express itself"

If the original English placename given to the area was Kansa, then Kansas gets first dibs on the name. End of story. Now to something that really matters...

Exactly, Devin needs to haul his ass over to the Wyandotte County Historical Museum and check out the historical maps. We have the junior architect tryin' to tell a couple of amateur historians about Kansas. The Town of Kansas, Missouri was named after the Kansa Territory, which is now Kansas state. You're correct in sayin' that Kansas City, Missouri was named before Kansas City, Kansas.phxcat wrote:If the original English placename given to the area was Kansa, then Kansas gets first dibs on the name. Ok, listen, quit being so freaking ignorant. I may want to be an architect but I know far more about history.
Also, The Town of Kansas was named after the river! I have said that, and all the books I have read say that.

Sounds to me like Kansas City was a city before Kansas was a state, period.
Kansas came along and named the state and then KCK pulled it’s crap (changing from Wyandotte to Kansas).
Regardless, I hate the name, the confusion and the weird stereotypes that go with it.
I guarantee that if KCMO were called Westport, Missouri, its image would be more on par with St. Louis than what it is now.
Can't do anything about it now, but when people ask me why KC is in Missouri, I just tell them that KC,MO was a city before Kansas was a state. That clears it up pretty fast.

Like I said before- if the original use of the name was used to describe a place, regardless of the legal position of that place, then that place gets to use that name. Now if you Missouri-centrics don't stop complaing about it, then I am going to pack up and move to Mexico. (Missouri.)If the original English placename given to the area was Kansa, then Kansas gets first dibs on the name. End of story. Now to something that really matters...

It just makes it confusing is all. If I was having a kid and wanted to name him something unique after say a grandfather but at the same time a close friend of mine has a kid first and names the kid the same first name, I'm changing the name of my kid.
There were more indian tribes and other interesting features in the area that is now the state of Kansas that they could have used. Why name your state the same thing a city just named itself a couple years prior? Obviously everybody knew of the "Town of Kansas" at that time.....
Just confusing and wish it would have been done differently...no changing it now of course. Hey I'm from the state of Kansas and I always thought it was stupid.

I think Wyandotte and old Kansas City (KS) were separate places, but when they consolodated, it all became Kansas City.GRID wrote:Kansas came along and named the state and then KCK pulled it’s crap (changing from Wyandotte to Kansas).

Ignorant? You should be ashamed of yourself for speakin' to adults like that. Didn't your momma teach you any better?KCDevin wrote:Ok, listen, quit being so freaking ignorant. I may want to be an architect but I know far more about history.

So you must agree with me then if the Town of Kansas was named after the Kansas River in the Kansa Territory? I'm glad to see we're gettin' somewhere now. The Town of Kansas sat on the edge of the Western Frontier...all the Indians were moved to the Kansa Territory and other Western territories. It was a good name for a Missouri town sittin' on the edge of the frontier...be proud Kansas Citians and hold your head high!
