Project near Westport and Main...

Post by trailerkid »

I'm becoming more and more obsessed with turning the intersection of Westport and Main into a thriving Midtown apex of urbanism.

I noticed a sign on the north side of the street (across from Osco) that mentioned something about a new development coming there soon. Is there a thread about this or does anyone know what I'm referring to?

I don't know, but I concur with your zeal for that intersection.

here here, thats what i was referring to somewhere else. its a possible rendering i believe, as the property is still for sale, i believe. this area is my favorite in midtown, though. renovations on the big apartment building are underway. a new bistro/bar is going in by clints i believe.

that intersection is an important psychological anchor point for midtown. right now many people do not have a good view of it, but it is not as bad as it seems.

It's the big 'p' word: potential.

If that intersection got an urban redo it could be something that helps give Midtown a HUGE shot in the arm.

There is indeed some sort of rendering that I didn't get a good look at, but it looks like a large redevelopment plan for the block north of Osco. We need a larger vision for this intersection on the level of the Gateway project in Mission, but every little bit helps.

There was a big effort to redo this area 20 years ago.  That's when the bank building went up to replace the decrepit Werby building, there was a porno shop that was replaced by a pharmacy(now scientology), the Osco bldg was restored, Sorreal went in the old theater building, and for a while Mama Stuffeati's was the hottest little dining spot in town. What happened that the area could not sustain?  Back in the streetcar days, owing to the intersecting lines, this was a vibrant retail and service area.
