2011 - 2012 College Football Season
Is there not already a thread for 2011-12? (I didn't see it if there is one) In any event...
Not directly football related, but some tragic news from K-State...

I'm glad to see most pundits are choosing KU to finish tenth in the conference this year, which would be an improvement over their twelfth place finish last year!

Re: 2011 - 2012 College Football Season
This is the year where you either see Turner Gill make modest, noticeable improvements, or where Gill continues to have issues with his team giving up and looking incredibly lost on the field. KU was so inconsistent last year, we should expect that he motivates the team to perform at maximum effort for every game on the schedule. This is also the year where he dictates how long it is before he is truly on the hot seat, if at all. A last place finish this season, and he should be worried about next year (and perhaps even this year if we are getting trounced). Probably 8th or higher, he can feel a bit more secure. With this schedule, we are not expecting much, especially with all of the holes in talent we have.KCMax wrote: I'm glad to see most pundits are choosing KU to finish tenth in the conference this year, which would be an improvement over their twelfth place finish last year!

The first coaches college football poll of year:
Oklahoma #1
Oklahoma State #8
Texas A&M #9
Missouri #21
Texas #24
Why is Texas ranked? They were 5-7 last year.

Actually, I am surprised they are ranked. We were up in Austin a couple of weeks ago and the word was they were picked by some to finish 7th in the Big XII (-2). UT will get the benefit of the doubt with a lot of early season pollsters until they prove otherwise.AllThingsKC wrote: The first coaches college football poll of year:

I think MU will surprise. A lot being put on the departure of Gabbert but when I've seen Franklin play, he was impressive. Let's hope he doesn't get hurt after successive losses of highly ranked QB backups to drug-related problems and transfer leaves Mizzou thin at the backup spot.

Re: 2011 - 2012 College Football Season
In 2009, before the season started Mizzou lost Gabbert's likely successor out of Blue Springs (Dalton) http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4124182 . I believe he would have been a junior or senior in the coming season? Along with Gabbert leaving early, that hurt the depth chart for this season. Then Gabbert's brother left this summer. Mizzou had 4 highly rated (out of HS) QB's and is now down only to Franklin...I'm not sure who will back him up.shaffe wrote: Highly ranked QB lost to drug related problems?

Oh right, I had forgotten about Dalton. Yeah he would have been a junior or RS sophomore this year, but obviously wasn't cut out to be a high major D-1 athlete at the time.
However they do have Corbin Berkstresser coming in this year who is pretty highly regarded by the staff. One thing I don't think I'll probably ever worry about as long as Pinkel is the coach is the QB position.

Of course this Missouri fan shouldn't cast stones from my glass house of less than impressive Week 1 performances, but at least we aren't coming off of a national title and Miami(OH) is probably a hell of a lot better than Utah St.

Re: 2011 - 2012 College Football Season
It was a comedy of first game errors to the extreme. Our defense looks pretty good (especially Arthur Brown, he was all over the field). Most of the offense is fine except for the turnovers. Really, the only problem that I saw is that our offensive line isn't cut out to be playing on a Kansas 6A high school team.kcmetro wrote:So has Old Balls lost his touch?

Sounds like KU's problem last year...the O-line. KU looked good on offense last night, but their defense sucks. So maybe we win a couple more games this season.KCPowercat wrote:Yeah offensive line play bothers me.

I was just surprised to see a Bill Snyder team struggle like that.

No I didn't watch the KSU game, but to only win 10-7 tells me they must've struggled.KCPowercat wrote:You saw it?
