I didn't hate it at first, but it's tired. Call it something else, even South Loop or whatever, SoLo just sounds so conterfeit and contrived.

Yeah I'd rather call it South Loop or even the unoriginal "arena district"

Where is Solo? Is that the crossroads?

South Loop....north of 670, south of 13th....the "dead" area downtown where all the surface lots are.....where the arena WILL go

I find it amazing that that part of town has existed as long as it has, without having a recognized name.

It's so un-original. So 90's. South Loop sounds better.

I don't know. How about something real, like Williams Park or Fallstowne, or something. I can't believe it doesn't have a real name- that its common name is by association with highways built in the last 50 years.

I hate 'SoLo'. It's such a ripoff (SoHo, LoDo, ad nauseum), it already sounds dated, and it just plain sucks -- the area is already So Low, we don't need to be reminded...thanks, Kay! What's wrong with "The Crossroads"? Since, you know, it is the crossroads between downtown and midtown and all.
I suggest (in no particular order):
1. The Crossroads -- which begs for a blues bar called The Crossroads (cliche, I know)
2. South Loop (kind of unoriginal, but true)
3. Jazz District / Jazztown / Birdland / Other Jazz Reference -- just expand the whole thing west?
4. Pendergast Park
Surely there's a million more that beat 'SoLo'.

Why not just call it Downtown? After all, it is in the loop and is downtown.

Agreed. We don't need yet another sub-district to confuse people anymore than they already are. We already too many different areas competing for mindshare. For most people in the metro, they are doing good just to know that there difference between Downtown and the Plaza, let alone SoLo vs. Crossroads or Quality Hill or whatever.Brooksider wrote:Why not just call it Downtown? Just market the whole thing as Downtown, and then when necessary clarify with something descriptive like "south end of the loop", "near the new arena", or "13th/14th/whatever Street".

That's fine with me, anything but 'SoLo'.

The area they are talking about is in the loop? I thought the area in question(so named SoLo for South of the Loop, like other So neighborhoods: SoMa, SoHo, etc) encompassed places like Town Topic, Manny's, Jilly's, Smokin' Joe's, Fiorella's Jackstack and the Hereford House.

No just south loop, not south "of the" loop.bahua wrote:The area they are talking about is in the loop? I'm with Brookside, call it Downtown.

It makes it even more stupid if SoLo means "South Loop" because the name SoHo means "South of Houston Street" in NY. On the mayor's site, the President and Power and Light are listed under the SoLo project.

It's even worse than I'd imagined.

It's lame attempt to emulate what the Mayor sees as "cool" urban name. Even using South Loop wouldn't be too bad as long as it's not contracted to SoLo. That one is just terrible.

Um, then I see no reason at all to give it a name. It's part of downtown proper.
(btw, I find it annoying that people refer to a circle of expressways as a "loop." It's seems like a very tacky imitation of a good use of teh word elsewhere.)
