How many workers are employed in Downtown KC?

Post by Ingersoll1978 »

Hey guys...

I'm doing a paper...and have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to!  How many workers are employed in the Kansas City CBD?  I need it without the Plaza, Hallmark area, etc.  An answer ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's around 90,000 in the "greater downtown" area, including Crossroads, Crown Center, River Market.  Maybe 75,000 within the loop/CBD area.

in 1990 the Central Business District (the loop) of Kansas City had 56,901 workers, 7.22% of the total metro workforce of 788,089

i imagine it is less now - like maybe only 45,000 people working in the loop, considering since then we have lost Midland Loan, many jobs at Aquila, most of the tenants in One Kansas City Place and The Town Pavilion, many offices that are now apartments and condos, etc.

I actually found the answer (after searching online for an hour and a half)...it's 58,000 in the CBD and almost 100,000 counting the areas south to the Plaza.

That's using the downtown council's definition of downtown...which we all know, nobody can decide what our downtown is....so this site uses the council's definition....so our answer is 100,000 :)

50k in the loop (ridiculous for a city this size)
90k with crown center, river market etc (still pretty sad for a city this size)
250k in the "river crown plaza" (about what our downtown should have)

Yeah it's pretty sad for a city this size.  Only 5-10% of the metro's workforce of 1,000,000. For comparison, it's 50% in Des Moines.
