The building in the center, next to the Italian Gardens demolition site, is the Brookfield Building.

You took this from the Peck's building?

brookfield I think is the one he means....the ground level has been gutted due to condemnation?  The barber used to be on 11th has now moved to Commerce Tower.

From two weeks ago in the Pitch:

http://www.pitch.com/Issues/2006-03-16/ ... _full.html

Twenty years ago, the Brookfield Building, at 11th Street and Baltimore in the heart of downtown Kansas City, was filled to near capacity. Today it stands empty, a victim of neglect.

Its former tenants endured power outages, boiler trouble and tiring climbs up the stairwells when the elevators were down. "The services were bad," says lawyer Stanley Wiles, who vacated an office on the building's 10th floor nearly a year ago...

So it looks like this is yet another case of the owner letting the building deteriorate into Hades out of hopes he can knock it down and get TIF to build anew?

ok, thanks, so there are no known plans for this such as renovations?

It would be a shame, a real shame to loose this building.

That was such a great little spot there.  Street level retail on both visible sides, usually 100% occupied with local services like the barber, optician, food, etc.  It already had a lot of what the Downtown Council is spending thousands to get through their retail recruitment program.  Sad.

But we have $4b in downtown development going on now!  Seriously, there needs to be a expedient way to get properties like these out of the hands of owners who just let them deteriorate.  Fix it or you're gone.  There is no reason this building couldn't be full of life.

The 905 Grand bldg was originally the Grand Ave Temple Bldg.  The Methodist church around the corner built it on their property for income and somehow lost control of the structure.  Townsend, the buyer for the old Fed Reserve, is supposedly interested in including it in his project to clean up the block.  The Grand Ave Temple on 9th was known as the mother church for methodism in KC.  It has a quite beautiful interior and great acoustics.  Sadly it needs funds.  Much of the plaster work on one side has melted from leaking roof and the balcony is closed off for safety reasons.

One of the last two is the Scarritt Buildng.  Don't remember which, but it does say so on the exterior, I think on the side street facade if not on Grand.

The building on the NE corner of 9th and Walnut - the one next to 909 Walnut - is called Waltower.

The Scarritt Building is the one to the north of 9th street on Grand (second picture immediately below).  I'm not sure what the building to the south of 9th on Grand is called.(first picture immediately below).

i would doubt we will lose it. it was used as recently as a year ago, and i do not see anyway that it is structurally unsound.

Supposedly working on financing for renovation into condominiums.  Securing parking to make it work for residents seems to be a problem.
