Are we going to let everyone and his mother move to Johnson County when company moves occur? That damned county needs to stop growing... How is Downtown going to grow to compete with cities like Minneapolis if we have places like Johnson County taking attention and residents from it? The governments in Johnson County need to stop giving out tax incentives and stop trying to become better than the inner city.

I just pray something happens to cause the companies like Executive Hill, Sprint-Nextel and Waddell and Reed to all move to the urban core.

The problem is those tax breaks they hand out to businesses and residents so they move there.

Old Devin isn't coming back, I'm just always going to have a hate for that damned county and it's leaders unless they give us their businesses and residents.

I'm just saying why not try to at least sell the MO side to newcomers where they will pay MO taxes, vote on MO issues, have a vested interest in MO period, you know the side of the state line where nearly all the attractions are, where the core of the city is etc.

If you are not working in the KS suburbs, I seriously don't see why you would not choose an area like the Northland where KCI is ten minutes away, Downtown is ten minutes away, worlds of fun, the casinos, Smithville Lake etc.

And a Clay or Platte County address and more than likely a KCMO address.

I'm sorry, but JoCo is KCMO's biggest enemy right now and that is not changing anytime soon.  You guys can say it's a "nice" suburban area and it is, but it's no nicer than Platte County, yet it's more expensive and it may as well be Dallas when it comes being a true part of the KC area on most issues.

If the guy wants to live in JoCo, more power to him, I wish him well, but believe me, there are plenty of people pulling him to JoCo outside of this forum, from co-workers to real estate agents, why not educate him as much as we can on some of the other options?

Besides, JoCo is trying hard to compete with the inner-city, and they are winning in getting upper and medium class people and big businesses. That is why they need to be completely stopped... I wonder if KCK could try to go to the state government and pass something to stop that.

The "old Devin," it seems to me, was back as soon as he stepped back in the door.

Moving2KC: It sounds like you're in the market for suburban life. Let me just say that I don't think you'll be any more impressed with Kansas City than Omaha, if you live in the suburbs. Suburbs are suburbs.

You people just don't make any sense. You are the ones being irrational. Your satisfied with mediocrity and that is why you are irrational.

And on the personal side. You have no business talking about my personality. You don't know what i'm like in real life.

God, thankfully the Ohioans on skyscraperpage were much more mature than Devin when I asked them this question.  They were very helpful.

Moving2KC - ignore people like Devin.  There are a hundred threads in which they can throw tantrums about JoCo.

Johnson county is a fine place to raise a family, and if you feel better suited in suburbs, then you will enjoy it.

Is your job in JoCo?  If so then it makes sense to live out that way.  If you aren't necessarily tied to one part of the metro, I do recommend the northland, like some others have pointed out.  Traffic congestion can get pretty bad out in JoCo (not to say it can't up north, but it is much better).  The northland is one of the (if not the) fastest growing parts of the metro, with all sorts of new restaurants and retail.  Yet it still has plenty of green space since it is not nearly as solidly built up as other parts of the metro.  Also, it has very easy access to downtown and the airport, plus you'd be able to get out of the city a lot quicker if you ever plan on making return trips to Omaha.

Unfortunately I don't think we have many forum members from south Overland Park, but anywhere around Sprint will be fine I'm sure.

wow.  welcome to the forum, moving2kc, I apologize for the ranting and in particular 'kcdevin'.  There are times that I find myself a bit embarrased by the immaturity of some of the posts on here...just ignore 'em.  If high-quality suburban living is your thing, south JoCo will suit you extremely well.  Not my cup of tea either, but I'm sure you'll find it quite pleasing, if a bit pricey in places.  Schools and services are fantastic, cultural amenities less so.  As Grid mentioned, if you're not working in JoCo you might want to check out some neighborhoods up north, especially in and around Parkville.  Some very nice areas and often cheaper than many of the Kansas suburbs with comparable quality of life.  Check out Fairway, Roeland Park and Mission in kansas also, much closer to urban amenities (right across the state line to west of the city, older inner suburbs) and very nice areas in general.  Good luck in the hunt!
are we spinning free?

I'm still around, and when I have something to add I'll post.

Passion is a great thing, and I fully appreciate the feelings of those who dream of a great downtown.

For us, the decision will be based on the quality of life we seek for our family, and there are hundreds of little things that go into the decision.  We aren't tied to JoCo in any way and I only brought it up because we thought it was a nice area when we were there last fall.

Don't ever lose your passion, Devin.  I don't know you or anyone else here for that matter, but there is nothing more powerful than a passionate, well-reasoned arguement.

We do appreciate all of your comments.  On our next trip we'll be sure to check out more neighborhoods, all over the metro.

I especially get a kick out of the person here who evidently likes to model Che Guevera.  Now thats funny.  He won't like me...I plan to make lots of money, and spoil my children.  I'll give some to charity, but only on the Kansas side.  (How was that?  Am I getting it?)

Yea ok Chef, sure..

anyways, I'm sure if you're looking for great schools, low crime rates, hot moms, and hummers JoCo is the place for you.

It is what it is, JoCo IS suburbia in KC...  It's a great place to raise children.  If moving2kc loves suburban living, then I would strongly suggest JoCo, the Northland and of course eastern jaco.

joco was the flavor of the week in this region for raising a family, for like 20 years. it is, just fyi, falliing out of favor. people are moving to other parts of kansas now, and joco is becoming the step child. which, to people like me, is just funny.

if i were to live in suburban KC, it would be in JoCo, though i prefer the more mature northeast johnson county over south johnson county...but since south johnson county is growing like crazy, i am apparently in the minority.

as far as JoCo vs. other suburban areas, JoCo is definitely the most "developed" new suburban area in the metro.  the northland and eastern jackson county are a bit more rural, less developed, and have less in terms of restaurants and shopping (for now, anyway).  johnson county is home to a lot of great mom+pop international eats as well as every chain imaginable.  also, while the Northland and places like Lee's Summit are getting more and more upscale shopping, there is no reason to believe they will be competing with JoCo anytime soon, since JoCo continues to add to its supremacy in that department.

that said, if you think you might like a more secluded, wooded niche, East Jack might be for you.

and The Chef is wrong when he says JoCo is falling out of favor.  it is still the premier suburban destination for many, and hasn't shown a lot of signs of slowing down.  JoCo is still going strong - it's just that East Jack and the Northland are finally coming into their own as well.  there are alternatives to JoCo now, which i guess wasn't the case, say, ten years ago.

glad you think so. to me, when the census shows a still growing, but growing not as fast suburb, i tend to believe that.

Johnson County is basically a 500,000+ person suburb.  it can't post giant % gains like Platte County can, which is 90% rural.  to each their own, though.

It might not show the highest % growth in the metro, but that's because JoCo's over 500,000 persons.  Trust me, I'm estatic that the Northland and East Jax are experiencing tremendous growth, but let's not get it twisted... JoCo is still the premier suburban area in KC bar none.

However, I do see the Northland really taking over in about 10 or 15 years... along with KCK, which I'm surprised no one has even mentioned.

Sorry you were exposed to all of the anti-Johnson County and anti-suburban trash.

I live on the Missouri side of the State Line in the Red Bridge area.  Live about 10 minutes away from the Sprint Campus (south on Wornall, west on Red Bridge Road, at State Line it becomes College Blvd and take it to Nall, turn south and there is the campus after a few blocks).
If you do not mind paying Missouri and Kansas income taxes (Mo gives you a credit) come to the Missouri side.  Housing prices are generally cheaper.
If you want a newer house try the neighborhoods west of the Avila College campus.  If you want to stay in Kansas check out the neighborhoods south of 119th Street, just west of State line.

If you want any more information or help give me a PM.

Welcome to the area.
I may be right.  I may be wrong.  But there is a lot of gray area in-between.
