Would really like to see an improved streetscape along 18th street West into the Crossroads to really connect the 2 areas as much as possible but I believe that is coming along slowly but surely. If you can connect that effectively to crossroads area 18th & vine would be a nice hub to start to spread out to the North, South, & East. Gives you something to build off of and move toward say Truman road on the North and infill.
I would hope 18th & Vine can put together an application for the Reconnecting Communities Program just like Westside did

It is. Between the 'Phase 2' in the photo and the building south of it in that apparently gravel lot.

I had always been under the impression that 18th/Vine powers did not want to connect Crossroads. Always seemed like a no-brainer to me.

The project at 18th and Lydia might jumpstart development west of Paseo along both sides of 19th Street to Troost.

Longest tease ever, but very excited that it's finally here. They already had a soft opening.

If you haven't been to The Spot yet, please go now. Chef Shanita is still doing amazing work in the kitchen! Such a great option compared to most of the other 18th & Vine food offerings (except for Soiree, of course).

Request Development Assistance Team Meeting for $22M mixed-use project at 18th & Paseo/Vine by McCormack Baron Salazar.

"This redevelopment effort focuses on a new mixed-use infill building called Jazz District III which is located on the south side of 18th Street between The Paseo and Vine Street. The reconstructed “House of Hits” building will be incorporated into the site and the design of the new buildings will respect the architectural detailing, scale, massing, and fenestration of the surrounding properties. Ground floor commercial space will line the new pedestrian-oriented streetscape and the upper floors will contain mixed-income housing. Our project creates and preserves over 10,000 square feet of high-quality commercial space in the 18th and Vine District. The 18th Street facade will be lined with glass commercial storefronts that encourage window shopping and pedestrian activity. The new city streetscape will allow shops to spill out onto the public realm with sidewalk dining and product displays, creating a festive and lively atmosphere. With a flexible floor plan that accommodates both large and small-scale establishments, we hope to accommodate a wide variety of tenants and encourage local entrepreneurs start ups to grow roots in the District. The upper floors of the building contain 48 units of high-quality mixed-income housing, ensuring that low- and moderate-income residents are not displaced by gentrification and can continue to enjoy the neighborhood as it improves and grows. Increasing the population is a critical component to the long-term sustainability of the district as it will generate vitality, support local businesses, and create a sense of security through increased pedestrian activity. Our team is exploring the possibility of artist-preference housing and is collaborating with the nearby Zhou B Art Center on formal details of this partnership."

The two-phased project will wrap around the Buck O'Neill Center in the former Paseo YMCA building on city-owned surface lots. Kevin says it's the west side of Lydia, but I think he meant to write the east side of Lydia.

Apartments Proposed for City Property Near 18th and Vine
Another apartment project is in the works for the 18th and Vine District, this one an up to 195-unit proposal that would be built by Grayson Capital on the west side of Lydia between 18th and 19th streets.

Grayson won approval last week from the City Council to negotiate a deal to develop that city-owned property for Phase I of a development. It also would include a second phase retail project on city-owned property at the northeast corner of 18th and The Paseo.
...
Phase I of the proposed development along Lydia calls for a 4- or 5-story apartment building that would include a blend of studio, one- and two-bedroom units aimed at a mixed-income market. Units would range from 500 square-feet to 900 square-feet.

Phase II currently calls for a 12,400 square-foot retail building, although Collins said the final design could change depending on how the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum expansion across 18th Street unfolds.

Former KC workhouse and surrounding parcels put on market. Former plan dead.

Long-abandoned KC castle joins more than 20 acres available near 18th & Vine
...
UrbanAmerica, a minority-owned development firm with Miami and Texas addresses, recently listed the Kansas City Workhouse Castle, a historic yellow limestone structure at 2001 Vine St., plus about 17.4 acres of surrounding land, for sale through Clemons Real Estate.
...
That same land now is part of the new Clemons listing, spanning seven blocks in the Wendell Phillips neighborhood. The blocks range between 0.72 acres and 9.4 acres. Counting the castle, they altogether total 21.2 acres, composed mostly of vacant residential-platted lots.

Developers plan to break ground Wednesday on a project that will turn a vacant lot at 19th and Vine streets into the first phase of a mixed-use project called One Nine Vine.

Phase 1 involves a $25.6 million, six-story apartment complex with first-floor retail under 80 apartments — 66 market rate and 14 affordable — at the southeast corner of 19th and Vine.

One Nine Vine’s first floor will offer restaurants and retail, and the project will have 30 covered parking stalls and 55 surface spots, Simmons said in a release.

The projects are at the forefront of what Simmons anticipated in 2020 would become more than $100 million in private development in the district.

KC plans to buy Parade Park Homes from HUD, transfer to new developer
Kansas City is advancing a plan to acquire one of the nation's oldest Black-owned housing cooperatives, now in foreclosure proceedings, and transfer it to an Indianapolis developer in an effort to shore up the affordable community's future.

The City Council on Thursday is scheduled to consider a measure that would authorize the city's acquisition of Parade Park Homes, a 510-unit housing co-op near the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Kansas City would buy the 26.6-acre community from HUD for $10, contingent on HUD's own acquisition at a March foreclosure sale, and immediately transfer it to Flaherty & Collins Properties for redevelopment.

Development Humming at 18th & Vine with New Apartments, Other Projects
...
Part of that development upsurge includes the Jazz District III project that is planned for the south side of 18th Street between The Paseo and Vine. It will include 48 more mixed-income apartments and 10,000 square feet of ground-level retail space.

The Jazz District III received word this week from the Missouri Housing Development Commission that it's receiving $1.24 million in federal tax credits and $868,000 in state tax credits. The developer is McCormack Baron Salazar.

The project also received $4 million from the Central City Economic Development (CCED) Sales Tax District, a tax approved by city voters to assist projects on the East Side.

hope the momentum continues in this area and they can create a nice & welcoming connection to the Crossroads. Also Hoping it will spur some development along Truman Rd. Would be great to see it developed more from Grand to Paseo. Get that rolling and then look to go beyond

This District is not being developed or ran properly, that's why there's is no real momentum 25 years later. Everything built is in disparate lots strung around haphazardly around the area with no cohesion so there's still no critical mass. Instead of a critical mass of infill mix fronting 18th that would improve walkability, appearance and progress, they are developing everything in disparate lots away from 18th, apparently purchased from cronies to line their pockets. Visitors and tourists still walk along 18th that appears empty and desolate because all of the new projects are set back. It's almost as if someone was deliberately trying to make 18th street looking desolate. They should have fully developed 18th street into a real district before building apartments 1, 2 and some even 5 blocks away. It is mind boggling how poorly 18th and Vine has taken forever to develop but that's KC leadership 'getting along to get along....'

The collapsing into a ruin church on Paseo needs to be demolished., Would have been an interesting conversion but now it is a nasty front door to the district.
