That's disappointing. A parcel that large had potential to be a mixed-use site.
Wouldn’t they also want a stadium next to their training facility then?KCtoBrooklyn wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 6:15 pm So I guess that is for the NWSL team? Any word on the stadium capacity? I wonder if SKC II (formerly Swope Park Rangers) could share the stadium.
Is PortKC responsible for the route the riverfront development has taken?TheLastGentleman wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 10:08 pm Berkley is one of the most baffling missed opportunities in the city. This could've been a meaningful extension of the urban core but instead it's being developed like it's in lenexa

Or we lose another Starbucks opportunity (900 jobs) like we did because there wasn't enough office space available -- or a parcel available to build.normalthings wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 10:11 pmwith the pace of kansas city development, the soccer field will be 30 years old before the lot would have been built on anyways.

A lack of new office space in downtown Kansas City may have cost the area a shot at a 900-job opportunity.
According to KSHB, Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) was searching for a 100,000-square-foot Class A office to locate a major operation, and Kansas City was in the running until the company notified the city they were moving on.
The Economic Development Corp. of Kansas City told the television station that the coffee giant was looking at several factors in its location decision, including office space, workforce, airport and political climate.
CityScene KC reports that a recent Downtown Office Summit was focused on the loss of the Starbucks opportunity. That meant discussions of how to address the lack of new office space in Downtown. Currently, the required amount of new office space would take 18 to 24 months to build.

The Swope Park soccer village facility was built as a practice facility for Sporting, so...Chris Stritzel wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 10:20 pm Whoever wants to build practice fields, office, and private parking here must have something else in mind. Initially, I thought it was going to be a park amenity but now it does make sense for this to be a training/practice facility. Would a NWSL team really build a practice facility at the riverfront park and play out at the Legends?
Swope is cheap land. Been saying this all along. It's hard to justify the streetcar going down there if it were fully built out with more dense uses let alone the suburban sprawl that was happening. But now the area is developing way worse than ever I thought it would. I sure hope it's open to the public. Maybe this will turn into a great park, who knows. But it can't be private practice field.kboish wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 6:56 am This does not seem to be a good use of this land. And frankly, they should cancel the streetcar extension to the riverfront if this is the kind of development they are gonna do. Ive been cooling on the Northern extension anyway, this pretty much seals it.
I wonder if they could transfer the money received from the Feds to a river crossing instead.
