That's disappointing. A parcel that large had potential to be a mixed-use site.

Wouldn’t they also want a stadium next to their training facility then?

That's pathetic. If Port KC thinks that's the highest and best use of that land, KC is going to get really left behind in the next 10 years.

Berkley is one of the most baffling missed opportunities in the city. This could've been a meaningful extension of the urban core but instead it's being developed like it's in lenexa

with the pace of kansas city development, the soccer field will be 30 years old before the lot would have been built on anyways.

Whoever wants to build practice fields, office, and private parking here must have something else in mind. Initially, I thought it was going to be a park amenity but now it does make sense for this to be a training/practice facility. Would a NWSL team really build a practice facility at the riverfront park and play out at the Legends?

Is PortKC responsible for the route the riverfront development has taken?

Those specs are a bit smaller than most MLS training centers but it's close. Sporting KC has a new training center so this project has to be for a lower-tier men's team, NWSL, or a collegiate team.

I can't imagine how they wouldn't be.

NWSL ownership is on the record with their plans for a women's soccer-specific stadium. It only makes sense for the training facility to be in such a premium spot if the stadium is across the street.

Or we lose another Starbucks opportunity (900 jobs) like we did because there wasn't enough office space available -- or a parcel available to build.
KC was runner-up for 900-job Starbucks operation; scarcity of new downtown office space a concern

A lack of new office space in downtown Kansas City may have cost the area a shot at a 900-job opportunity.

According to KSHB, Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) was searching for a 100,000-square-foot Class A office to locate a major operation, and Kansas City was in the running until the company notified the city they were moving on.

The Economic Development Corp. of Kansas City told the television station that the coffee giant was looking at several factors in its location decision, including office space, workforce, airport and political climate.

CityScene KC reports that a recent Downtown Office Summit was focused on the loss of the Starbucks opportunity. That meant discussions of how to address the lack of new office space in Downtown. Currently, the required amount of new office space would take 18 to 24 months to build.

We lost out because we only had developable lots and not office buildings already available or under construction

This does not seem to be a good use of this land. And frankly, they should cancel the streetcar extension to the riverfront if this is the kind of development they are gonna do. Ive been cooling on the Northern extension anyway, this pretty much seals it.

I wonder if they could transfer the money received from the Feds to a river crossing instead.

Swope is cheap land. This is far from that

None of that park should be used for a practice facility

I see no way that RF soccer will not be public use fields (unless it’s paired with a big stadium and tenant who demands it).

There are 40,000 youth soccer players in KC. It’s probably the biggest sport being played by youth and young adults in our area and is growing quickly. Maintained soccer fields do not exist in the core. This will provide a much needed family and young adult amenity that is also transit accessible.

Been saying this all along. It's hard to justify the streetcar going down there if it were fully built out with more dense uses let alone the suburban sprawl that was happening. But now the area is developing way worse than ever I thought it would. I sure hope it's open to the public. Maybe this will turn into a great park, who knows. But it can't be private practice field.

I gave up ripping into this over a year ago. It's even worse now. They don't have a fuckin clue. Lost opportunity to expand KCs very limited urban living.
