Cleveland, my birthplace

Do a trip report here....go to another city and want to relate it to what KC is doing right or could do better? Give us a summary in here.

Cleveland, my birthplace

Post by omenapt »

So a family reunion of sorts this past weekend to Cleveland!

Left in 1968 , visited several times after that until about 1977!  Lots has changed , but really quite the un-attractive city I remember.  Any fondness for nastalgia was quickly snuffed when I realized so many of the problems that city faces and you can only do so much to Cleveland, and then thats it!..Its still is Cleveland!

Rich, rich  cultural base, but remember now it is on 'wrong side of town' and many suburbanites stay away.. Could not convince my lesbian cousin from Lakewood to come over to the eastide to meet us at the Botanical Gardens!  (too scurred!)

Shaker Square has lost its luster  and my cousin(she has issues) says its because it becoming "black".

the downtown really wasnt that lively, even with a baseball game going on.  (the entire eastside of the cuyohoga flats bar district was entirely boarded up.  evidently it was getting too crazy, almost like that 'party cove"at the lake of the ozarks where hundreds of boats 'tie up" and party and sex is rampant and quite public)!

I just dont think you can force urbanity or density or streetlife...Its either there (i.e NEW york, San Fran) or its not...

Al in all , generally left with negative feelings about the city , going into the trip with higher hopes, and hope it doesnt taint my hopes for KC to make changes to its core!  KC has far better visuals and more ped-friendly possiblities, i think!

It's sad that a metro of close to 3M DT doesn't sound all that great. I've always thought of Cleveland as being better off. Like STL the city is losing people but the DT is still worth investing in. Any pictures?

dont get me wrong,,there are some beautiful spots(sorry no pics..go to urbanohio.com), however, the old and massive industrial wasteland for the urban backdrop just doesnt do it for me(some may acutally find the rawness appealing and somehow more authentic).  I saw many similarities to St Louis, although st louis is softened a bit by all the vegetation.

Cleveland is almost identical to SL, save for the colder winters.....

that's true, but youve said yourself that Cleveland is St. Louis' closest cousin.

the architecture of every major city is as different as it is similar.

Yes, Cleveland and STL are two very similar cities, but St. Louis is far more beautiful, both architecturally and topographically.

I love Cleveland's downtown architecture, but the Cleveland residential vernacular is atrocious (IMO).  This style predominates in Cleveland neighborhoods:

WHOA WHOA WHOA!

Did I just read that?

Please continue, Chriz.  B/c on the PGH thread, I was called out for such a comparison.  Walking downtown feels EXACTLY the same in both cities.

^I would disagree with that, although their downtowns are similar.

Did I say that?  :?

But you have to admit, Cleveland vernacular isn't exactly awe-inspiring.

that picture of cleveland is pretty misleading.  cleveland may not have a lot of red brick, which is obviously Jive's material of choice, but it looks better than that.  most of Cleveland looks like Hyde Park in KC or something.
