Beds were being hauled into the building this morning.

WGN of Westport did the plans for this rehab in 2013 (don't know why the long delay), with some mechanicals from my father's firm. The principal told me then that they had to twist some arms to convince the owners to preserve the best of the 1904 architectural elements.

By the way, the building is called the "Gumbel" building. Just noticed that this thread title is misspelled.

Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
yes, they've done an amazing job on the exterior.
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
The Hampton Inn sign on the front has been installed (and lit!) as of this morning.
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
Damn that's pretty great.

Nicest looking Hampton Inn I've seen.
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
Such a great job on the restoration of the outside! And the signage looks like it belongs not some egregious afterthought. This is and always has been a classy building.
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
just made a may 7 reservation for my parents. steps from the library streetcar stop on opening weekend!
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
Are their rates reasonable?DaveKCMO wrote:just made a may 7 reservation for my parents. steps from the library streetcar stop on opening weekend!
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
$199 for that night. cheaper if you prepay. it's less than the marriott in the crossroads, which was at least $20-30 more last i checked.geeman68 wrote:Are their rates reasonable?DaveKCMO wrote:just made a may 7 reservation for my parents. steps from the library streetcar stop on opening weekend!

Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
In downtown Chicago the cheapest comparable hotel I found years ago next to public transit was the Palmer House Hilton. The Hampton Inn being a fancy and brand new boutique I'm comparing it to the PHH premium rooms. Their executive level king room is $209 before discounts.
I would call $199/night very reasonable.

Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
alas, they did not open in time for my parents to stay there over the weekend. they put us up at the president, so that was a nice consolation. another month or so before they actually open. lobby looks great!DaveKCMO wrote:just made a may 7 reservation for my parents. steps from the library streetcar stop on opening weekend!
Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
I walk by there at lunch quite often and agree that its looking quite nice inside the lobby, they just need to get this thing wrapped up and open!
