Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
pumkin, enough already, just post all your postcards! Do you have a thread someplace, I didn't miss it did I?
I always wondered if that deal on top revolved. Seems odd since half of the time you would be looking into the hotel.

Ha ha, you're thinking of Fang that hijacks threads with his history! I doubt I have posted that many scans of my postcards! Probably can still count on one hand actually. Fang has a thread on postcards through time but he gets them off the library and the image quality is horrendous. I should start scanning some of mine and put a thread out there. Maybe someday.GRID wrote: pumkin, enough already, just post all your postcards! Do you have a thread someplace, I didn't miss it did I?

I was being serious, you keep talking about your collection. Thought it would be cool for you to share it. But I know, that takes a lot of work.

Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
it has a very "fantasia" feel to it.
Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
Too bad it never looked as good as the artist rendering does. However, it was the first entirely new hotel dt in thirty years. At that time the convention center consisted of Municipal Auditorium only.

Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
what i am starting to wonder is did this damn thing ever even rotate or was it a plan that got ditched? if you recall, at the truman sports complex, they actually started to build the system for the retractable roof before they ditched it.
kinda gotta wonder.

Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
I think it must have revolved because in my 1981 book on KC it states that it does, and the hotel was built before 81. That part seems to have escaped from people's minds though. I might just head over there tonight and poke around. I'm not feeling too sleepy.
Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
It did actually revolve. There were lots of similar Holiday Inns built around the country, some talller like in Chicago. After rooftop restaurants, revolvers became the thing. KC needs another top-of-the -whatever type of place.
Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
it would be most excellent if the crowne plaza flag change lead to the return of the revolving restaurant!

Does the restaurant atop the Hyatt revolve?
There is no fifth destination.

Yes, the way it is designed, the kitchen is in the center, and the floor around it revolves. The whole unit does not spin on top of the Hyatt, just the internal floor. There are different speeds depending on how busy it is. They always try to start you off looking at downtown. Don't set anything on the ledge next to the windows because that part does not revolve, and soon you'll realize that you've moved and your belongings are on the other end of the restaurant!FangKC wrote: Does the restaurant atop the Hyatt revolve?

Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
yeah, the dining room is on a turnstyle, which sits between the 42nd floor and the restaurant which is the 43rd. the kitchen is not the only part that is not rotating, the entrance off of the elevators and restrooms, along with the coat check, do not rotate. inside the coat room, there is a setting to dictate how fast the floor moves. they move it faster throughout dinner to make the dinner service move faster, and slower at the late hours when it is drinks only.FangKC wrote: Does the restaurant atop the Hyatt revolve?
funny thing, the ceiling, windows, walls, and planters do not move at all, just the lower part of the floor move. when i was chef of skies, in 93, they actually tore out the whole floor to redo the platform that rotates because it was warped and got stuck frequently.

Ok, walked in and went up to the 28th floor. It's now a ballroom.
I believe this door goes out to the ledge that circles the ballroom.
Some views out the ballroom windows:
This is a board room adjacent to the ballroom. Was probably the Rainforest Lounge as mentioned in my previous post.
The Lower Lobby where the gift shop is...and an odd almost life size UPS truck out of plywood.
A mural in the lobby lounge

A Botticelli repro, sort of tacky even though it must have cost a lot.

They have been there for awhile now. I saw them the last time I went DT about 3 weeks ago. I miss the good old days with no work and classes so I could go DT 1-3 times a week.PumpkinStalker wrote: Crowne Plaza temporary banners are hung on the building.

Re: Downtown Doubletree to change to Radisson
Its not that bad - we stayed there back in May for a couple of nights. I've paid more for worse.drramos101 wrote: This hotel looks like major shit inside. Looks tacky and gross!
