Yep mall was torn down in 2006, the gateway was announced in 2005.

At this point they might have to yank back out all the rebar and concrete work done for those apartments and start over. Can’t just leave that sitting for years like they’ve done. What a shame.

City staff gave some more info about the financing pause on an unrelated Zoom call last evening. Apparently it is basically impossible to move the S.O. bonds right now due to interest rate restrictions and the covid-related fluctuations.

Bunch of workers showed up a week or two ago and took apart the crane. I think maybe they also repossessed some crated HVAC stuff that was on site but I'm not 100% sure of that. Sigh.

I wonder if the 3 mega suburban projects will end up collapsing and not coming back.

60 days to cure the default by paying the taxes. Still doesn't help them finish the project by the December deadline. They'll have to make a new proposal, or I suppose sell the property.

Well, the Gateway taxes are all paid up now, per the county website.

16 years later and back to square one...
Mission Mayor Sollie Flora said the city is now “in the unenviable position of being back to some version of square one” with Mission Gateway.

You bet. Full disclosure, I'm on the city council, but my posts here are strictly from my own point of view and do not represent the city's position.

In February the Gateway developers made a presentation to the council about a new proposal for a development agreement. Much of it is the same as what was being constructed in 2019. Details in the packet and video from the meeting: https://www.missionks.org/event/city-co ... session-9/

Construction on the apartment project at 5399 Martway (Mission Bowl site) has begun in earnest. Latest details are usually posted to the city's project page at https://www.missionks.org/city-governme ... -projects/

A 70+ unit apartment building has been proposed at 58th and Nall not far off of Johnson Drive. The site is currently parking lots and disused professional offices. So far it's made it through the necessary hearings and votes without much resistance. Another vote is on the council agenda this Wednesday, June 15th. https://shawneemissionpost.com/2022/05/ ... ll-145946/

Hartman Hardware at 5800 Johnson Dr has permanently closed. The Shawnee Mission Post has reported that the Casey's convenience store chain is interested in opening a retail-only (no gas) store in that spot. They already bought the property. No official news from the city, just what we've read in the Post. https://shawneemissionpost.com/2022/06/ ... on-147538/ https://shawneemissionpost.com/2022/06/ ... on-147789/

Johnson Drive from Lamar to Roe will undergo a rehab and road diet as part of its scheduled maintenance this summer. Hard to believe it's already time for the 10 year resurfacing but so it goes. https://shawneemissionpost.com/2022/01/ ... ve-140099/

58/Nall apartments passed (rezoning and preliminary development plan) on a 7-1 council vote.

Big Biscuit is taking over the vacant Don Chilitos space at 6909 Johnson Drive. Proposal goes to Planning Commission July 25th.

"Open House" info meeting about the Johnson Drive rehab + road diet tonight 6:00-7:30 at the Powell Community Center.
