Where else could it go? Riverfront? West Bottoms? I was thinking it could be reused as the frame over a stage at some outdoor performance space. Another repurposing idea would be to use it as an entrance gate over a street to some district in the City--a much bigger version of this:

I'm only talking about one arch span--not all three.

I looked at this photo today and was wondering if there is a way to disassemble the arch portion of the bridge. It could then be reassembled and lit up over the deck park.
that would sure be neat.

Not really apples to apples, but I love the idea of a playground city. Much to be learned and studied as our urban areas face existential crises. Bias aside, I feel KC might be better equipped to navigate this transition better than others, although depending on the day you might catch me saying the opposite.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/202 ... -city.html

"Cities thrived before the office was invented and can still triumph after the office has gone. Unfettered by cubicles and 9-to-5 jobs, we could achieve, more comprehensively and more joyfully than before, the city’s primordial aim: bringing people and ideas together. We need this integrative urban power now more than ever as social fragmentation, political polarization and economic inequality pull us apart. As we face the climate crisis, the allure of activity-rich neighborhoods could promote sustainable lifestyles. As we fight segregation in all its forms, dense cities can bridge our divisions. As we struggle with loneliness, an irresistibly vital street life could drag a generation of people off their phones and back toward one another."

* I admire idealism as much as the next guy, but this NYT writer really let loose here.

Cities need to come together organically. Artificial posturing toward "activity-rich neighborhoods" usually ends badly. Think of the Knoxville Worlds Fair. Or the Hudson Yards debacle in NYC.

Any news on this project? To get any of it done by the time of the World Cup would be equivalent to the convention hall fire rebuild over a century ago.

Waiting for environmental, which MoDOT has not advanced. No approval, no lid. To present this is as "approved" is a lie and ignores the realities of the Federal Highway Administration and the National Environmental Protection Act.

HNTB almost to 30% design.
City Manager to execute an Assignment and Assumption Agreement in the Amount of $2,818,296.00 with the Port Authority of Kansas City in connection with a contract between the Port Authority and HNTB for design services related to the South Loop Park; authorizing the City Manager to enter into Contract Amendment No. 1 with HNTB for $650,000.00 to provide for additional survey and utility coordination work; and recognizing an accelerated effective date.

Under the contract, HNTB is charged with preliminary design work on the 5.5-acre park atop Interstate 670, up to the 30% design stage, as well as analyses needed for federal and state environmental clearances. HNTB has completed about $5.2 million of the contracted work but received a little over half that amount, or $2.9 million, "despite repeated demands by Port KC," according to the city's proposed ordinance.

Haven't seen anything about this yet. What exactly does this mean?

Also doesn't look like the project got the $75 million grant from the Department of Transportation's Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Program

Assuming you can thank Schmitt and Hawley. Big article today about how they haven't pushed for any earmarks for the state.

Reconnecting Communities is a discretionary grant program. Awardees are selected by the administration, not Congress.

Congressmen take credit for whatever money comes into the community, so they can take the blame for the lack of money too.

So the administration is not influenced by the Congressional representatives of the respective states?

Interesting
The park is included in the city's $15 billion Emerging Projects Agreement, struck with the Department of Transportation in October. The city said in November that it consulted with the department's Build America Bureau and worked on a letter of interest so if the $75 million grant fell through, the South Loop Link could be positioned to proceed with a loan. Local funding sources could help meet resulting debt obligations, though officials did not specify which ones.

Representatives for the South Loop Link did not answer questions ahead of publication regarding how missing out on the $75 million grant would affect funding efforts and the timeline. Changes may keep the team from completing the park by its targeted opening ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The city's latest public timeline, as of Nov. 30, called for the park to procure final design and construction-manager-at-risk services, and execute air rights and development terms with the Missouri Department of Transportation, in 2024's first quarter. Early construction then would start in the third quarter.
