I had been there before, but forgot how great it was. Went there this weekend after first fridays, and had a great time. One of the best bars in KC. Great Jazz, great people, great atmosphere, stiff drinks!! Cant beat that! Anyone ever go?

Went to a double bachelor party in 2000 that started at the Phoenix before moving on to the Ameristar (I forget what it was called back then) and finally what was then Bunz. I remember really enjoying the Phoenix, though at the time i was still pretty unfamilar with the area and didn't really have a clue where I was.
I didn't get to have much in the way of drinks when i was there, though, we had rented a cargo van and I was the driver hauling a dozen guys around to all these places.

I love the Phoenix. It's always a blast, but it's important to get a table, so you have to get there early. I do wish they had more on tap, but I just content myself with Shiraz and any other southern hemisphere red I can get my hands on.

I was told today that the Phoenix is becoming a donut shop. Anyone know if this is true?

i dont know, but it seems like that would be a rather large space for a donut shop.

Not true, majority owner is seeking a new operating partner; has to remain a jazz bar per the language in the lease. However there is a great coffee shop right down the street at the SoHo bakery.

Thanks, Parrot.
Someone else has pm'd me that there is a bakery currently working on a downtown location. The bakery is to be called the Phoenix Bakery. May explain the rumor.

about a month ago there was a piece of paper on the door saying it would open as a donut shop in December. It was only up for about a week. All that is up there now is a sign saying the Phoenix is still planning to reopen on August 13th-ish

not quite on my commute.
Thanks Dave....I wanted to do babycakes but that would double my walk and I'm too lazy to get stuff for everyone to feed on if it's more than a block or two out of the way.

Also Judi's Bakery in NKC on Burlington Road (
http://www.judisbakery.com/). It appears to be kind of a big industrial donut factory (mmmm, donuts) -- supplying donuts to corporate clients. But they do have a storefront coffee shop that is rather nice, given the surroundings. Good, not amazing, donuts (although to be fair, I've never been there early in the morning when they would be freshest), but certainly very close to DT.

I never have liked donuts. Just don't like the texture or flavor. In fact, I don't really like cake or most pastries.
Well, I have been known to eat an apple cider donut from Louisburg when I make it out there.

Unless the Phoenix reopened as a bar last night, it cannot reopen now as a bar without securing a new liquor license from the city.

If I had a billion dollars I would buy those damn parking lots infesting the eastern periphery of the Garment District and develop them.
