The neighborhood tried hard to save it. The city didn't move in time or couldn't move in time. The owner did seem to make a good faith effort to board it up. This was accessible housing, around 40 units, that are now gone.

We're guessing they're about 120 people living an alleys near Independence Avenue. They have been offered services, but most have refused. I don't believe in over-incarcerating people, but we're at the point where we have to start enforcing drug and sex trafficking laws, as well as arson even though it's hard to prove. They are preying on homeless people who are trying to use the shelters.

That should have been a building that the City used the housing trust fund to get renovated and used to get people into supportive housing.

I can think of other apartment buildings that are sitting empty awaiting renovations to be completed that are sitting ducks for this type of fire loss.

The Harlem Nite Club after a mob bombing in January 1935. The club was in the Paseo Hall building on the north side of the street (1414 E. 15th St.--Truman Road) near Paseo. It had been built as a dance club named Dehoney’s Dance Academy and could accommodate 2,200 individuals. This was one of two locations for the Harlem Nite Club. Musician Bennie Moten was the first black manager of the hall.

In 1938, St. Stephen's Church bought Paseo Hall.

Architect Frank M. Howe designed the Scottish Rite Temple at 15th (Truman Road) and Troost. It was the first Masonic Temple in Missouri. The temple opened March 20, 1904, and the structure was used until a new temple was built in 1930 at Linwood and the Paseo. The Friendship Baptist Church purchased the building in 1940. Since the early 1960s, the Evangelistic Center Church occupied the building until it was destroyed by fire in 2016.

On the NE corner of E. 12th and Forest was the building where the famous Spinning Wheel nightclub was located (1208 E. 12th St.) during the jazz era in Kansas City. The club was in the third retail space from the corner.

Had trouble placing some of these until I realized 15th St. became Truman.

I fixed that Moderne. I forget that people don't remember the name change. Fifteenth Street was renamed to Truman Road on Presidential Inauguration Day in January, 1949.

The photos below are of structures that existed on the block bounded by 13th, 14th, Troost, and Harrison in 1940. This block was mostly removed by freeway construction. Only the parcel where the Odd Fellows Hall stood remains and has a structure on it.

Do you have any idea how many buildings or how many housing units were there at one point? At its highest? I wish we had a map.

I don't know off the top of my head. One could go block by block and count the houses and then the apartment buildings, estimate how many apartments were in each building, and come up with a rough count.

Emerson School was located at Pacific and Tracy (553 Tracy). Emerson was originally an all-black school, later known as Garrison School. It survived freeway construction.

The Garrison School was designed by architect William F. Hackney and completed in 1887. The last mention I can find of it as an active school is in 1974. The District put it up for sale in 1977. It was sold to KC Parks and Recreation, and the building was demolished in 1981. A playground was later built on the site.

The photos below show structures that once existed on the block bound by 11th, 12th, Harrison, and Troost. None shown in the photos have survived.

Only a commercial building--built after 1939--at 1104-06 Troost remains on the block from that era. It didn't appear on the 1940 tax photos for the block. It's occupied now by Gate City Glass Co.

Ability KC Industries and United Contractors of Kansas City occupy existing structures that replaced earlier ones on that block.

Below is the NW corner of 12th and Troost. The building is 1130-34 Troost. Lustig's Market and Safeway Taxi are seen in the photo.

Image

Below: All the structures below were on the west side of Troost between 11th and 12th streets. The first retail spaces past the corner building were at 1122-28 Troost Avenue. A barber pole indicates that one tenant is a barber.

Image

Below: Gene's Radio Service occupies 1120-A Troost.

Image

Below: One of the tenants of 1120 Troost is Tylow's Delicatessan.

Image

At 1116-18 Troost, we see Sun Cleaners. I can't make out the other tenant.

Image

A house remains at 1108 Troost.
