KU/KCK <-----> TSC East/West Transit

The $1 trillion infrastructure bill that President Joe Biden signed Monday is a motivating factor for a new east-west transit study.

The general study area is bounded by Rainbow Boulevard on the west, 31st Street on the north, 43rd Street on the south, and the Truman Sports Complex (home to Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums) on the east. The proposed western terminus for the corridor is the KU Health System's main campus. The proposed terminus on the east is the Truman Sports Complex with a direct connection to the Rock Island Corridor, which is a 144-mile section of land that is in the process of being converted from railroad use to a recreational trail.

According to the release, the total cost of the transit study is estimated between $225,000 and $250,000. The RFP calls for submissions to be received by Dec. 20 and a selection to be made in late January.
edit: Changed the topic from Streetcar to Transit Study as study broader in scope than just streetcar.

It's good to see a formal study because this general route makes so much sense to do.

Please note that it is not called a streetcar study for a reason, but clearly stakeholders have that top of mind. The project will need a new funding mechanism as the existing TDD model (assessments + sales tax) still won't cover the capital and operating costs.

So, it looks like E-W is beginning to get momentum here and blow the "NKC route option" out of the water here...right? It seems like ever since E-W became an idea, people are circling around that now. I haven't heard a peep about the NKC stuff in months compared to E-W.

If they're taking 4 years to build a a roughly 4 mile line now...is it 8 years for the E-W one? They can't be as a long as this one...

A friend in Gov (not KCATA or KCS) seems to think this will go all rail. Will be interested to see how it pans out.

If they're taking 4 years to build a a roughly 4 mile line now...is it 8 years for the E-W one? They can't be as a long as this one...
There are some great economies and times savings that come with scale. Using existing rail ROW (where possible) would cut down or out the 1 year of utility relocates

I've changed topic to Transit given study is broader in scope than streetcar, though clearly is the target.

I read somewhere that KU Med requested the study include serving their location. If a rail solution reaches into Kansas to Cambridge or Rainbow, I wonder how much funding could/would be provided by the hospital/university and UG?

East-west bus rapid transit route that will connect Rock Island corridor with urban core transit spines (Main, Troost, Prospect), future MAX service to replace/augment existing 31, Scoping the study now to begin in early 2022, Will leverage Linwood PSP study completed in October 2020, Coordination with bike plan (major separation), Will pursue federal funding for design/construction, but no local match identified, Will stage a third corridor (Indy + North Oak) for regional funding and/or infrastructure bill

What bearing will the study currently underway have on this? I was not expecting specificity regarding mode until after that wrapped up. Had a feeling streetcar was going to be a heavy lift.

From what I’ve heard it’s at least going to trend closer to genuine BRT than the Max style “brt” that’s existed before

^Genuine BRT typically has dedicated/isolated lanes and may have traffic light priority, which would be surprising. But could imagine same level boarding platforms as streetcar.

To this other question, the study will determine what mode gets built when and where. Don't assume the entire corridor will be streetcar.

Could be worse. Could get nothing at all. At least with BRT, money can be stretched to make it go further and if the need ever arises, the route can be swapped to streetcar.
