Kevin Collison is reporting that KCATA has asked developers for ideas for redeveloping the former transit center on the southwest corner of 10th and Main.

KCATA Seeks Development Ideas for Tenth and Main Including New HQ

The KCATA is requesting proposals for its former transit center property at 10th and Main, including a potential new office building to house its headquarters and other tenants.

The agency is seeking proposals that call for a transportation-oriented development (TOD) and would occupy about two-thirds of the approximately 1/2-acre site in the heart of downtown.

It suggests a “Regional Transit Authority Headquarters” of about 30,000 square-feet that would include ground level commercial space and the potential development of an additional two- to three floors for office, retail or other uses.

The potential relocation of the KCATA offices from its current address at 1200 E. 18th St. is part of a larger strategic real estate plan by the agency, under the direction of Robbie Makinen, president and CEO.

The agency controls approximately 18 acres along East 18th Street including its offices, maintenance barn and vacant land. It’s located between the East Crossroads and 18th & Vine District.

Makinen has said he’d like to make it to make it available for other long-term development.

30k sq ft would be what, three floors? Union Carbide + Lane Printing is 10k per floor combined and isn't too far off 3/4 the size described

So that's a 6-7 story building.

Seems like a waste of space for that spot. Should me double that height at least

Glad to see this moving forward. We need better green space downtown, not necessarily more, and given this sites location on the streetcar line in the heart of downtown it has always seemed to me it makes more sense as a building than a plaza.

I still like the idea of a food truck parking spot but yeah this isn't the best location for it. Get something interesting in there.

Back in the late eighties downtown office boom there was a post modern mid rise with a curved facade along the intersection proposed. The Star had renderings.

This is the first phase of a rethinking of the current KCATA campus. That lane at 18th and Vine could fit a stadium, an innovation district, maybe both. There are better uses for the land and with the facilities ageing it sounds like they are taking a look at moving some pieces.

The KC Star donated it's news article clipping library to UMKC's Miller Nichols Library. It's probably there.

The Mid-continent public library has full KC star archives online, going back to the 1880s. Found these from June 1984.

It's not an unattractive building. I wonder what the reason ultimately was for it not getting built?

The Savings and Loan Crisis his in 1986. A primary cause of more than 1000 banks failing was bad real estate lending.
So it's not impossible it was delayed long enough they lost their financing.

The rest of KC Place was cancelled around the same period. One started construction in 1985 but none of the rest of the complex was built.

Great detective work! You wouldn't happen to be able to find a rendering of the unbuilt UMB tower at 11th and Walnut, would you?

The UMB building was completed in 1986 as far as I can tell, so any articles would’ve been around then

I would assume 84 or 85 for renderings of something completed in 86

Here is the 70s plan - haven't found anything from the 80s.
