Red = Entire city block is gone

Orange = Surface lot or very low-rise parking garage

Yellow = Parking garages

And this is just in the loop, and I probably missed some

I know this was probably meant to look depressing but, if you squint, you can see some progress here.

We always complain about the empty parking lots (which I also hate) but our having renovated most existing structures is a big contributor to our lively downtown. As we run out of buildings to renovate, hopefully we will take out more parking lots.

I wonder if the Kansas City Southern headquarters building at 114 W. 11th Street will become apartments once the dust settles after the merger with Canadian Pacific Railway?

I think there are several tenants in it now, but I don't know if KC Southern still has some of their offices there. Does anyone know? Broadway Square Partners/DST Realty owns the building.

Born and raised. I'm not sure grumbling about how far we have to go helps us make any progress. 20 years ago, I probably would have thought that every lot would be gone by now. Of course, I thought the streetcar to the Plaza would have happened a decade ago too. Progress is slow. At least there's been progress.

Truly a simple means to quell this: Raise tax rates on the dirt and lower the taxes on the improvement.

The fact owning an acre of empty lot in the CBD yields a tax burden of a couple thousand dollars annually to the city is absurdity.
