Requirements for an NBA All Star Game.

Does KC have any of these??

No yes no
No way Bartle hall is that large. Pretty sure it's under 400k sq ft. Does KC have any five star hotels? I think Loews might be? KC is not close on any of these. Pretty high bar.

"An exhibition hall the size of eight football fields. Boasting 388,800 square feet of column-free exhibit space on one floor, Bartle Hall truly stands in a category by itself." But that is just the main hall The center also has other exhibit space that might be acceptable depending on how the NBA would adapt their usage of the space.

And Vegas was chosen back then because of the promotion by city leaders as a potential home for a NBA team.
"The choice to choose Las Vegas as the location was widely regarded as a bid by the city to give it its first major sports franchise. Mayor Oscar Goodman met with David Stern to discuss the possibility during the events. On April 5, Goodman sent a letter to the commissioner, requesting a meeting to sort out the matter. All-Star MVP and former teammates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal welcomed the possibility, amid the gambling."
Now maybe if the city leaders did the same as Vegas they might have a chance, a slim chance.

You are right. Bartle is only about 400k, I think with American Royal, Sprint, etc it’s gets above 600k but not all in one places.

KC has no 5 star hotels. Loews is 4 stars.

I'm curious as to why the NBA needs 650,000 sq ft of exhibition space for an all star game?

To be honest, sometimes I forget the NBA actually exists.

Indy just hosted and not only has that much space but is also expanding. Tons of fan events, activations, other activities

Indy has three 5-star hotels?

Would have been nice to get Hotel Bravo up before WC.

Indy has Conrad Hilton, JW (which are a mix of 4.5-5 star hotels). Their JW is 1000 rooms though

KC has the hotel rooms but not a 5-star hotel -- although that did not prevent FIFA from selecting KC.

KC Convention Center has just under 400k gsf exhibit space -- the entire Center itself surpasses 800k gsf of function space when considering the Conference Center, breakouts under the halls, Municipal, Music Hall, etc.

I don’t think KC has that amount downtown still. Certainly not commitable room count nor convention center walkable

Those are good points.

I can add that Downtown -- as defined when selling the city -- consists of all properties in the loop, Crossroads and Crown Center. When adding in the soon-to-open AC Marriott and Origin (although not technically in the Downtown submarket), the inventory is at ~6,000 total. When adding Midtown, Westport and Plaza to form the Central Business District submarket, KC is at ~8,300 total.

'Walkable' is subjective and varies by event.

'Committable' is not specified, and that's also subjective and changes depending on the event.

The NBA itself is not contracting a block at 7,250 rooms on peak. The NFL itself did not contract anywhere near that amount of rooms on peak for the 2023 Draft.
