Where on campus? North of 39th? About same sq ft as City Center Square/Light well.
Biz Journal stated on the bluff west of P5 Parking Garage - assuming between the garages (P4 and P5)? Will be a sizeable addition.

interesting. Just looking at a an aerial map of the area, and finding the general area. Looks like there is a long skinny surface parking lot between the P5 & P4 garages that may be the location. Although the building they build would be tall & narrow, which they have done already. Or perhaps they are looking at the surface lot west of P4 that would have a side next to Rainbow. That would be more of a square shaped lot. Rendering maybe suggests the long skinny lot with a long narrow building/building complex

Will be interesting and excited to hear about the expansion. Helps not only patients with new discovers they will find & develop into treatments but from the growth of the area to bring in more high paying jobs, needing a highly educated workforce to the area.

Most recent KU Med Master Plan I could find: http://www2.ku.edu/~irsurvey/hlc2015/KU ... r_Plan.pdf

I agree, the skinny parking lot along Eaton Street seems to line up with the picture. Hard to tell.

The master plan is calling for a signature building on the southwest corner of Rainbow and 36th. That looks like the spot to me.

Or of course it could go right next door (to the south of 39th) to the tower they recently built on stateline.

South of 39 is the Cambridge garage and energy centers. North of the Cambridge Tower are 2 parcels planned for future hospital expansion.

So would this development just act as a new home for research that is already taking place or would it be a new entity that would offer an infusion of higher paying science and research positions? If the latter, it could be huge for the KC area.

Gotcha. I meant North had open space. But yeah, i guess thats for hospital expansion.

So yeah, im thinking Rainbow and 36th is where it will go.

KU Cancer Center's latest NCI effort is a generation — and hundreds of millions of dollars — in the making
...
The new building would be on a bluff beside the medical center’s P4 garage and west of the P5 garage, Jensen said. It would allow KUCC to pull together nearly 120 members, or about 90% of research activities, and house a new vivarium (biological research facilities). Two floors would be devoted to various blood cancers and KUCC’s stem cell transplant group.

KU Medical Center is a great attribute to the city, and they are clearly interested in keeping their corner of the metro vibrant. And I love the streetcar extension into Kansas -- gets lots of new funding sources into the game.

But it would have been much easier for the institution to grow if they had developed a master plan years ago. It really does feel piecemeal. For example, the parking hierarchy (it's hilarious if you know anyone who works there). An MD friend of mine has a mile walk each way from a juniors lot to her office. And yet more senior people can bid on closer lots, but then their offices move to more prestigious office locations, now farther from the better lots.

They should build an underground subway that shuttles people to the garages and parking lots like they have in Congress.

Kidding.

KU Med 2012 Master Plan. Shows KU Med vs TUKH owned land

I think KU MED will need another new education building in the not too distant future. Many of their current buildings are at end of life.

KU Med needs to think about developing a nicer neighborhood around the center. Apartment buildings, etc

Agree, they are moving in that direction thankfully with Cambridge Tower North and this new research building.

Cambridge Tower North is/was to be the first of 3/4 phases that would expand the hospital AND replace much of the existing hospital buildings. At the same time, KU MED is working to construct new education and research facilities on the north side of 39th. This is to say, we will eventually see things get condensed into taller buildings on the northside and the southside will slowly open up for redevelopment.

This link shows the vision for the phased replacement hospital. As we know, Phase 1 ended up doubling in size.

^snakes have a long history in medicine and pharmacology, in both practice and from Greek mythology. The likeness is probably intentional.
