I feel like the one I read about was in the heart of London. I don't believe it had a drive thru.

I question the validity of the "No drive thru means no McD's". I have no doubt that McD's was not into whatever offer the franchisee was trying to do at P&L, but we're taking their word for it on this one? It's clearly not a corporate mandate, so I think there's a bit more to it than what has been presented here.
This is McDonalds new flagship location in the heart of downtown Chicago ( it has multiple drive through lanes).

These are a few of the urban McDonalds that I pass on my way home (SOHO and West End). The MCD here have a lot of foods that can be eaten quickly while on the go. They offer a line of pretty tasty wraps for only 1.5-2 pounds. Stores usually have limited seating which is often on a different level (basement). Most have transitioned away from manual cash registers as well.

I think trying to change the mind of American fast food conglomerates toward eliminating drive thrus would be more difficult than trying to attract European chains that already have an understanding of urban living.

Please tell me that McD in downtown Chicago did not come at the expense of the rock and roll McDonald's.

Love Nandos. We pretty much skip the Chicago Street Food places and replaced it with Nandos

It did :(

Also - there's a Portillos with a drive through in downtown Chicago that always backs up into the street. Im not sure if you'd qualify that as 'fast' food (it's an institution like Pink's or the Varsity in Atl). It would be nice if they could redevelop that building with something more dense and keep Portillos on the ground floors.

You can't barely get a proper Italian Beef in this town. North End has one. Not many other good ones come to mind. R.I.P. Moe's Italian Spot.

I work downtown and would be all for it. Weird that they have locations in IL, IN, WI. IA, MN,MI all Midwest mostly around the Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, & Indianapolis areas. Then they have random ones in FL, AZ, and CA.

Need to keep the Midwest flavor alive and hit KC :)

It would be amazing if we could set up one of these downtown during the lunch and dinner hours. Maybe an unused private ally or parking lot could be repurposed for a few hours a day. It could also be spun as a way to allow smaller business owners and entrepreneurs a way to participate in the growth and revitalization of downtown.
