McGonigle's Market sells to family-owned chain
After spearheading plans to revamp McGonigle's Market in Kansas City, its owner now has sold the business for an undisclosed amount.

McGonigle's Market sold to Iowa-based Fareway Stores Inc., another family-owned operation that has 122 grocery store locations in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota, according to its website. It employs more than 11,000 people.

McGonigle's Market previously pursued plans to rebuild a larger 8,500-square-foot grocery store on site and add a 4,500-square-foot multitenant commercial building. It's unclear whether those plans are still in the works.

KC resolves McGonigle's expansion after news of sale

Earlier this month, just days after the City Council approved rezoning for the property, Mike McGonigle said he planned to sell the store his father founded to Fareway Stores Inc., a family-owned chain with 122 locations. The store is closing starting Friday and reopening sometime in early March.

Plans call for demolishing the current store as well as five nearby houses to make room for an 8,500-square-foot facility for the grocery store and a new 4,500-square-foot multitenant commercial building. The proposed project would span 1.68 acres at 1307 W. 79th St. on the southeast corner of Ward Parkway and 79th. The grocery store building would be constructed first, and the commercial building would replace the current store.
