walked the stretch between gillham and forest on sunday. lots of potential and only a few spots that serve as barriers. low-cost interventions (street trees, bike lanes, bumpouts) would make a big difference on east 31st!

First house of mouse: Reanimating Walt Disney’s KC film studio closer to reality than ever before
...
The realization of the site’s redevelopment — with renovation designs and study by BNIM — could be as close as 18 months away and would include a full rehab of the space to include a museum, new animation studios, and a co-working site expected to be managed by Kansas City-based Plexpod, Rigby told Startland News.

After a years-long hiatus, work could begin again as soon as this month — exactly 98 years after Disney first moved into the space in May 1922.

It's mostly open lots around there where a drunk can plow into without harm, but this car-ella deville has to do this.

Most of the damage from the car slaloming into the corner of the building has been repaired. Shortly after the collision, they built up the corner post to about four feet, very badly. Used the wrong mortar, and it was all smeared and looked like a poor DIY job. They stopped work, removed the mortar, redid the foundations, and built it up again properly. It looks really good.

There is new scaffolding erected on the west of the building. Not much activity though, since stabilising and repairing the automobile damage.

I hope they are using the correct type of mortar. Modern mortar is incorrect for older brick buildings. Using it can actually cause the old brick to disintegrate.

Right. You need to use portland lime mortar for masonry repair like that. I couldn't see any packaging to tell what they were in fact using, but the finished job looks lovely. The aborted first attempt last winter looked like the original contractor was using quikrete.

Given they screwed it up the first time, I have to think they made pretty darn sure not to do so again. Or at least I really hope so.

Thank You Walt Disney targets fall 2023 start on long-awaited Laugh-O-Gram Building restoration
...
The Missouri Development Finance Board later this month could vote on a $500,000 state tax credit application submitted by Thank You Walt Disney Inc., which next year hopes to begin an approximately $7 million rehabilitation of the historic Laugh-O-Gram Building at 1127 E. 31st St., just off Troost. The board heard an informational presentation on the project this week, after the city applied for the tax credits on the volunteer group's behalf in November.
...
Gary Sage, vice president of Thank You Walt Disney and leader of the building project, said the effort also intends to build on significant private investments made along the Troost corridor to date. The rehabilitated Laugh-O-Gram Building will support 83 new full-time jobs with average annual salaries of $60,000, according to its state tax credit application.
...
The $500,000 in state tax credits for the Laugh-O-Gram Building would provide a 50% match for $1 million in private contributions. A $2 million federal appropriation supported by now-Congressman Cleaver's office also now awaits Senate approval after passage through the House.

Contingent on the additional money, the building renovation could see construction begin in October 2023, allowing for operations to begin in December 2024.

Won't somebody donate a bunch of plywood to Thank You Walt Disney? The place is completely open to the elements and whoever might want to roam in and cause mischief.

Finally, upper floor enclosed with all new double hung sash windows. First time I have ever seen the building so close to being secured from elements.

Good to hear. Wonder if they'll tie it into the Disney100 exxhibit at Union Station somehow.
