I was reading the UG web site and saw that they just issued the building permit for construction of the first Cerner building.. It's hard to tell from the rendering but from the description it sounds like it is going to be an interesting building. It will be clad in stainless steel and glass and is supposed to resemble human DNA.

Groundbreaking today for Cerner offices in Village West
While site preparation has been under way for several months, the event will toast the start of the biggest installment of a $414 million development, which was approved two years ago in an agreement among Cerner, the state of Kansas and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan.

When completed, the 660,000-square-foot project will feature two nine-story towers of stainless steel and glass

I hope the final product looks absolutely nothing like the renderings. Not that the area has any architectural or natural beauty to detract from, but those renderings are almost appalling from an aesthetic perspective. In any event, the Legends area is building some critical mass that is pretty impressive.

Only cost $58,000 per job.

Sales tax diversions of $147 million from existing businesses at Village West plus $85 million in other tax credits.

(I didn't make any adjustments for the soccer stadium)

Saw some dirt moving just west of 435 and north of 70...as in right along the highways there.

I thought that was cerner last time I was out there. Interesting spot for them. They must be putting a big sweeping entrance to Village West Parkway.

Cerner to accelerate construction; start on second building at Village West

http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/20/38 ... ction.html

I wish they weren't building in a greenfield, and were wiling to invest in the urban core more--either in KCMO or the downtown part of KCK.

KCBJ theorizes that Hollywood Casino is interested in redeveloping it for a hotel. Not that I expect this area to be a model of density, but the two buildings are a mile away from each other...
The campus' current zoning, under a CP-2 general business district, already permits a range of project uses, including offices, hotels and mixed commercial and residential structures. Its proposed change to a CP-3 commercial district still would allow those uses while "accommodating those businesses that are typically more offensive by reason of noise, commotion, appearance, hours of operation or general image as perceived by the public," the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas' code reads.

The Change of Zone has made it through City Planning Commission. Goes to the Board of Commissioners on April 27.

Wyandotte Economic Development Council showed up in opposition discussing that we need more office space and it'll impact our taxes and a planning commissioner tried to further derail it.

WyCo needs to purge these oldheads bigtime.

Unified Government Board of Commissioners very opposed to this project. It has been held over one month for further discussion. Commissioners actually are out here exclaiming that we need more office space and this needs to be preserved as office space only. They don't even want to entertain a mixed-use office park.

As a young person trying to make this county better and bring great development to this county, trying to do the best we can and lay a framework to revive this county, this bs is so discouraging in every single way possible. Absolutely awful. Sorry for the rant but this attitude absolutely dejects me and burns me up.

I hope you let your elected officials know of your viewpoints - it may not do any good but I've lived in a family that for generations has complained about a LOT, yet never even voiced their displeasure to the people would could make a difference. Unless elected officials know their stance is unpopular then nothing will ever change.
