Its the Truman Sports Complex on steroids!

Proposal emerges to build three-stadium complex in downtown Las Vegas
The $1.57 billion Las Vegas National Sports Center plan includes a proposal for a 17,500-seat arena for basketball and hockey, a 9,000-seat partially enclosed baseball stadium and a 50,000-seat partially enclosed football stadium. The baseball and football stadiums could be expanded to 36,000 and 75,000 seats, respectively, to host Major League Baseball and the National Football League.

Why would they do this.  I think Vegas has more arenas then any city in the country.

Because even a city like Vegas with all of the tourism appeal in the world understands how important it is to be a major league city.  This would allow them to be ready for anything at any time, and facilities are actually holding them back in a few cases.

They're all tiny arenas, meant for college tournaments. Mayor Oscar Goodman is determined to bring a major professional sport to Vegas.

It does seem like a really odd time to do it considering the enormous  number of foreclosures in the city. Nevada overall is in a massive fiscal crisis. I can't imagine this will go over very well when they slash school budgets (already one of the lowest in the nation) and cut back on services.

The MGM and Mandaly Bay Arenas are not tiny, they host major boxing and UFC matches all the time.  The only tiny arena is probably the Orleans Arena.

Tiny for pro teams sports. That's what seems to be the angle here.

I guess this will supposedly be privately financed. $1.5 billion. So...what happens if they don't land a tenant?

Are they looking for 2-3 tenants or just one?  I'm not sure that even just one tenant (especially if it's NHL or NBA) will be worth the cost of all three stadia.  But, looking for 2 or 3 tenants seems unrealistic at this time.

Wow, crazy stuff.  If I were a resident I would NOT venture to any event off the strip.  As a tourist, the traffic and people are insane and you want the locals to venture to the strip for a basketball game and deal with that??!  OY.

Most sun belt cities are full of transplants with loyalties to established pro-sports teams

That's a good point. Its why new baseball teams in Tampa Bay, Arizona, and Washington have struggled a bit with attendance. Too many of the fans moved from somewhere else and still hold loyalties to their old teams. A Rays/Yankees game in Tampa is a road game for the Rays.

A’s throw a curve, plan to build $1.5B ballpark at Tropicana site

The Oakland Athletics have shifted their Las Vegas stadium plans, entering an agreement with Bally’s Corp. to build a $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat ballpark where the Tropicana Las Vegas now sits.

The plan would bring yet more dramatic transformation to the Strip: The Tropicana, a relic of the 1950s, would be demolished to make way for a partially retractable roof stadium on nine of the site’s 35 acres, a person with knowledge of the arrangement told the Review-Journal Tuesday.

In moving the ballpark site east, where it would be surrounded by megaresorts, the A’s are reducing the amount of public funding they want from the Nevada Legislature to $395 million. The Major League Baseball franchise was seeking $500 million in tax financing for a stadium on the former Wild Wild West site, at Tropicana Avenue and Dean Martin Drive, land the team last month had agreed to buy from Station Casinos parent company Red Rock Resorts.
