Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
(There is a similar thread about this somewhere, but I could not find it. Feel free to merge if need be.)
There have been a couple things I've noticed about our skyscrapers recently:
1. One Kansas City Place is now either lit up in red or pink at night. It used to be red, white, and blue on top. Now, it's either red (for the Chiefs?) or pink (for Breast Cancer Awareness Month?).
2. I see 1201 Walnut has a new red "Stinson" sign. Looks nice.
The reason I even bother to mention this is that when I watch Sunday Night or Monday Night Football, the host city always has a skyscraper lit up in the home team's colors. Some cities also have another building lit up in seasonal colors as well (like pink or red & green). I think something like that is one thing KC lacks. Other than 1KCP (which almost never changes their lights), we don't really have that one special building lit up for whatever the occasion.
Of course, this is a trivial/meaningless/no-big-deal kind of thing. It's just something that I have really noticed lately for some reason, so I thought I would mention it.

What about the Marriott? They light it up and usually turn it into a scrolling Marquee
Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
I think buildings that are lighted up look nice. But astronomers complain about uplighting. As a kid I used to be able to see the Milky Way from my backyard (but not Russia). Good luck seeing it now.

I could be misremembering, but didn't buildings do this in the 90s when the Chiefs were good and on MNF? I'm pretty sure at least the Marriott did.AllThingsKC wrote: (There is a similar thread about this somewhere, but I could not find it. Feel free to merge if need be.)

Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
Yes, I remember 1KCP changing their colors to red & yellow for the Chiefs, blue & white for the Royals, red & green for Christmas. That was back when the "normal" color for their lights was light blue. After September 11th, it was changed to red, white & blue. The only time it changed was yellow & white for Mizzou during the KU/MU game in 2007, as seen here:
To help give you guys and example of what I'm talking about, here are some photos:
Tampa:
Miami (for Breast Cancer Awareness):
Miami (for the Dolphins):
St. Louis (Breast Cancer Awareness):
Jacksonville (for the Jaguars):
Cincinnati (for Christmas):
Denver (for Christmas):
Pittsburgh (for the Steelers):
Cleveland (for Breast Cancer Awareness):
Just seems like KC could use something like those above.
(In an effort to save time, I hotlinked those photos. So, if one turns into an R-rated photo, I'm sorry.)

Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
I noticed last night that One Park Place is lit up pink. Presumably for breast cancer awareness. That fits into this whole building lighting scheme. It looked nice, though the lights had a little trouble reaching up the building. Still, the point was made.

Bank Midwest sign now atop Towne Pavillion.
Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
Driving around last night I was pleasantly surprised to see the PAC, Blue Cross building, Union Station and Liberty Memorial all lit up in blue in honor of the All Star Game. The PAC and Liberty Memorial even had images of the baseball Fanatikcs logo imposed on them. Wish more buildings would follow suit.

I love that we are doing this for the All Star Game. But, I'm not sure it's a such a great idea to light up the Liberty Memorial in blue and put the Fanaticks logo on it.

Its what our fallen veterans would have wanted.
Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
I'm hoping things will be lit up on Tuesday for the All Star game since it will be on national TV. Would be cool to see the buildings lit up more than normal.

I noticed that the top of the P&L wasn't lit-up as its usual color-changing self. Weak.
Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
Western Auto sign has also been off all weekend. I did notice part of the Abdiana sign is lit on the backside, which is odd because I haven't seen it on in years.

Wasn't around 10 when I was out taking picturesAllThingsKC wrote:Western Auto sign was lit last night.
Also, I was told the downtown buildings were told to leave their lights on until 11pm tomorrow night. Good night for skyline photos.

Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
That sucks. I wonder why they turned it off so early. The last time I saw it was just after 10pm or so.KCLover wrote: Wasn't around 10 when I was out taking pictures
Tomorrow's going to be a good night for KC altogether.KCLover wrote: Also, I was told the downtown buildings were told to leave their lights on until 11pm tomorrow night. Good night for skyline photos.
Re: Lighting up KC's skyscrapers
The buildings downtown are lit up way more than normal tonight too, even currently. Just looked outside and noticed them. Tomorrow is going to be an amazing day for KC.
