A grumpy old man tries to shit all over Omaha's streetcar proposal.

https://omaha.com/news/local/public-tra ... -top-story

Lots of talk about the KC Streetcar. He does have some good points, especially about not seeking federal funding. Seam like a missed opportunity to me.

IMO Omaha may see equal or higher ridership just because of their built environment. The whole city is centered around Dodge street already.

Opening in 2026 seems a tad ambitious.

It's not if they skip federal funding and have the local funding sorted out.

Seems Omaha SC authority is trying their best to shoot themselves in the foot with their Newley revised routing. They seem to be taking the approach of so many other cities from our SC class and after, as they try to please everyone with the route and hit every attraction.

It's still a pretty straight and easy to understand route though. My question is will it be another American curb running tram that is slower than buses or more like a true Light Rail lite system.

Lots of Omahans crowing about their new skyscraper being 677 feet tall, approaching Denver's tallest and that they will have 2 buildings taller than anything in KC, and how they are home to corporations committed to downtown and KC lacks such corporations.

Their largest businesses are committed to downtown whereas KC’a biggest aren’t.

Not all is rosy:
ConAgra left their downtown for Vhicago. UP rumored to be considering a move. TD bought out

TBH, the only thing that's different between Omaha and KC is that Omaha's downtown bank/bank-like companies want vanity towers and KC's equivalents...do not.

I think there’s a few more differences than that

The Council Bluffs proposed extension is what has me more excited. Dedicated ROW adjacent to a walking trail through all of CB. Basically a blank slate.

Con Agra leadership went to Chicago, but largest presence remains in downtown Omaha. In fact, Con Agra has tapped Hines to lead a big development called the Mercantile on what was their 'front lawn', which is well underway.

TD is actually in the suburbs, although it looks like Schwab is going to leave a large presence in Omaha in any case.

.. and there's always talk of UP moving.

Oh no question. I’m just speaking to it not really bringing anything new to the table in terms of the design. I’d love to see something like this pop up in KC as well
