This is great for KC. Glad this is being realized now. This past CFB season where all the new members succeeded wildly beyond expectations (while the old guard started dying) is bailing everything out

"Gundy, by far the Big 12's longest-tenured coach, looks at what the television markets Houston, UCF and Cincinnati will add, and BYU's large following, and sees a league that still has the potential to thrive.
"Are the four coming in more powerful from a television revenue standpoint than the two going out? It's going to be interesting," Gundy said. "Now you have strength of numbers where you have 12 [members], which is what we've needed forever. We could potentially be better off. I legitimately think that could be true."
"There's an opportunity for this league to be really, really good," Rhoades said. "I'll be as bold as saying: It could be better than what we are today." This past football season for the new members really bailed everything out beyond expectations.

Big 10 and SEC would now be to 16 teams, ACC at 15. Getting close to the time when conferences will start cutting schools to consolidate just the best teams. I don’t see PAC 12(10) being able to pull any Big 12 teams. They’re probably low man in the totem pole right now. A merge with Big 12 would be nice. Stanford, Cal, Oregon, Washington, Arizona schools would all be strong. Might dump TCU and WV to get stronger.

First off, this is GREAT news for Kansas City.
Secondly, if you're the Big 12 you rescind the offers of those 4 new schools immediately (BYU, Houston, UCF, Cincy)
You go get the Pac-12 schools immediately and merge with the Big 12. You create a super-conference and go big.

How are 2 schools joining a conference that has nothing to do with KC "GREAT news for Kansas City"?
Yes, it opens the door for the Big 12 to poach other Pac-12 schools. But do we really want KC competing with the West Coast for events?

Because KC is gonna have the Big 12 tournament for a long time with ALOT of big name schools rolling through. And probably can get the football game here every now & then as well.AllThingsKC wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 1:32 pm How are 2 schools joining a conference that has nothing to do with KC "GREAT news for Kansas City"?

And if you think about, this may secure even more Big 12 events in KC- it's now gonna be the obvious center bridge of the two sides of the conference.
And really what big cities would competing with KC from the Pac-12 if Los Angeles isn't involved now? Maybe Seattle? Doubt they're hosting a big 12 tourney or many events in that far corner.

Best result is probably a merger with the remaining 10 teams. Add two team, 1 East and 1 west to have 2- 12 team divisions. KC would likely never get football championship but basketball here might be solid. Battle would be with Denver for center of the joint conference.

And we could always argue that for KU, KSU, OSU & ISU it's much easier to get to KC than Denver.beautyfromashes wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 1:48 pm Best result is probably a merger with the remaining 10 teams. Not to start another "Denver fight" but KC has a much much better basketball setup & district than Denver does too.

Pretty easy to look up. Big 12 + joining schools had 6 ranked football teams including 4 in the top 10. Had 4 Top 25 basketball teams in the hardest ranked conference including the national champions the last two years.

Oregon, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona St., Colorado, Washington, etc.Goonies wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 1:56 pmWhat are the big name schools? Please you just lost OU/Texas. These schools are bigger than lots of the Big 10 schools.
And no, Big 10 & SEC are tapped out at 16 now. Doubt they'll be making moves for awhile. Y'alls escapade to destroy the Big 12 last has been put on hold for a good while.

Because 16 is a round number that they've always talked about for super-conferences. It splits the divisons evenly at 8 or 4. I'm sure they'll get to 20 down the road.Goonies wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 3:06 pmHow are they tapped out? This is a contradiction of what Thamel has said and he knows much more than you. This is you trying to blindly KC cheerlead again.AlkaliAxel wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 3:00 pmOregon, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona St., Colorado, Washington, etc.

Mind you that I was the only saying last summer *before* the Big 12 added the four new schools that there were plenty of paths to figure it out and survive. And now here is the path. So I was right, when everyone was predicting its "downfall. It seems more likely that you're just digging your heels in now to try to defend your weakening position on the Big 12 "collapse" than just reading the writing on the wall here- which is that this is a huge boon for the Big 12.
No blind KC support about it. The Big 12 was always better positioned than PAC or ACC, but y’all wouldn’t listen when I tried saying this a year ago. I hope you’ll see it and listen this time around.

They'll probably go higher that 16 and have an unbalanced schedule where the popular/good teams play each other and the weaker teams only get to play the good teams every several years. Then, the good teams will ask why the weak teams are getting the same money and will negotiate different payments. The weak teams will go along because the alternative is worse. Then, the good teams will kick out the bad teams. Inevitable. BTW, Missouri is a weak team.

Conferences are headed towards super conferences but I highly doubt the Big 12 will disintegrating anytime soon. They’re positioned to be able to fight & resist for a good while. Alot longer than ACC or PAC.Goonies wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 3:15 pmThe number of schools doesn't matter the revenue does. Do the schools brought in even match the revenue of Texas? The Big 12 is very much on the brink of collapse as is the Pac 12 only an idiot can't see this. Compare all the P5 conferences from a decade ago to now. If you can't see the difference you are blind.AlkaliAxel wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 3:10 pmBecause 16 is a round number that they've always talked about for super-conferences. Yeah, I don't see how there is anything other than a Power 2 of schools that are already in the P5 conferences or invited. If you're not in now, you'll never get in. Best bet for small schools is going to try to get big in the Sun Belt & make money that way.
Writing is on the walls now for the Big 12 & Pac-12, almost crazy to think that in one swift move, the ACC is suddenly in danger too.

Re: TIME TO FREAK OUT AGAIN ABOUT CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT! THE BIG 12 IS DEAD! MAYBE!
Lol no the conferences like the Sun Belt are the most screwed. If all the true Power 5 schools go to the Big10 & SEC only, then the Big 12 and such will just keep scooping up the small schools until there’s none left. The Sun Belt, MAC, etc will all die first.TheSmokinPun wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 3:39 pm Yeah, I don't see how there is anything other than a Power 2 of schools that are already in the P5 conferences or invited. And once again, it looks like the Big 12 is keying in on adding 4 PAC schools soon. You guys are discounting this too much. They’ll hold out alot longer than ACC or PAC.

I'm sure this means things to fans of this stuff, but it only tells me that the era of conferences having regional identity is over. I'd expect more national consolidation.

So what is driving conference realignment? Football or basketball.
