best margarita in kansas city?

Post by chrizow »

margaritas are awesome.  what's your favorite in KC?

since mi cocina closed, i'd have to go with ponak's.  pretty obvious choice, but they really are good.  however, sometimes i am not in the mood for ponak's food.  what other places have great margaritas (and, hopefully, good food)?

Yeah Ponaks is head and shoulders #1 in my book....everybody else seems to use the same mix that is way too sugary.  I'm interested to hear some other good ones as well....

End of thread.  Why is further discussion necessary on this subject?  Anybody who doesn't think the Ponak's rita is the best in town is a pansy who can't handle their tequila.

Honestly, I'm going to have to go with my own recipe.  Give it a try, it won't disappoint!
Makes about 5 glasses.

1 can minute maid frozen limeade
4 1 1/2 oz shots of best tequila
4 3/4 oz shots of Grand Marnier
1 freshly squeezed large lime (or 2 small limes)
6 oz of water
Fill the rest of blender with ice
BLEND!

Use slices of lime on rim of glass.
Enjoy.

is there no other place in town that makes them properly?  mi cocina did.  the ones at mi ranchito aren't bad, but i'm a little leery of going there after their recent health scare.

i've also been told about a place in platte city that has a huge selection of top-shelf and artisanal tequilas.  it seems like they might have a good one as well.

the "gold" or whatever margarita at Margaritas is good as well - it has good tequila (can't remember which kind), grand marnier, and doesn't use the super syrupy mix.  it is *STRONG* though.

I would like an alterative as I can wear down my friends with my constant suggestion of ponaks. :)

The Chili's in Westport has fantastic margaritas.  Too bad I heard it's closed  &&&    couldn't resist.

I'm not a big margarita guy, but the wife liked the selection at the newish place on the corner of Wornall and Gregory - can't remember the name.

OK folks, you obviously are drinking too many margaritas, as your retention is slipping badly.  (or, maybe no one reads my posts....hmmm?)

I related in my Poco's review that my three compadres stated that the margaritas mixed up by Claudia were probablly the best they had ever had anywhere.  Very refreshing, layers of flavor and infused with the desired kick.  Two of these folks have been dedicated Ponaks marg lushes for years.  Myself, I've always appreciated Ponaks offering when a buzz was the only requirement, but otherwise I found their margaritas to be too sweet and heartburn producing (and nothing else seems to give me heartburn).

i recall El Patron's margaritas being quite good as well, but the last time we were there the margaritas were totally weird.  i thought that some kind of cleaning product had been mixed with the margarita mix, or maybe the glass had soap residue or something on it.  we sent it back, thinking it was a fluke, but another soapy, bitter margarita came out.  bizarre.

the worst i've had in recent memory was at tacqueria mexico, out of that gurgling margarita trough they have.  it tasted like a mixture of lime gatorade, lemon Joy, and a dash of plastic bottle tequila from a Kum & Go.

The quality does suck - but it is on semi permenant "happy hour" pricing of $2.99.

actually, the worst i've ever had in my life was at the St. Louis U student union food court/bar area.  (SLU has cool indie bands come play free shows at the union, called the Billiken Room).  i saw the margarita mix and cactus-shaped glasses and asked the lunch lady-esque "bartender" "do you make a good margarita?"  she looked at me stone-faced and said "no, i don't."  of course i ordered one anyway.  it literally was 75% well tequila mixed with salt water.  i almost vomited.

The casinos can usually make a pretty damn shitty margarita.  I would also nominate the shitty Kaufman stadium rita - I have been to an afternoon game or two where the beer in the sun thing wasn't working for me so I thought I would give the Rita a shot - always need to remember just to suffer through the beer bloat.
