Re: Big 12 Football 2009
Gill is building the foundation for a Big 12 North dynasty. He is bringing on Illinois assistant coach Reggie Mitchell.

Mitchell arrives in Lawrence as a highly regarded recruiter, particularly in the Chicago and East St. Louis areas, having been credited with bringing quarterbacks Juice Williams and Nathan Scheelhaase ? a former standout at Missouri?s Rockhurst High ? to Illinois and luring future No. 2 NFL Draft pick Charles Rogers to Michigan State.
In 2006, meanwhile, he was named one of the country?s 20 best recruiters by Rivals.com, and was named one of the Big Ten?s five best by the Web site the following season.

Great get for Gill. Word is former DC Clint Bowen is joining Bill Snyder's staff at KSU.

Re: Big 12 Football 2009
What's funny about it? The defense was pretty good a couple years ago, but that had more to do with the players on the field than Bowen. This year we all saw what he can do when he doesn't have 3 good LBs and an all American CB. Not much.KCPowercat wrote: nope...interviewed but cosh is said to be sole DC this year....maybe in a position coach role its still possible.

metro...that's what's funny...it was the players but ku fans were all puffy on bowen when as you admit, he didn't have much to do with it
who said ksu fans were above it?

Well I think Bill Young had more to do with the defense than Bowen. Bowen seems like a nice guy, and I wanted to see him do well since he's a Lawrence native and played for KU, but it's obvious he wasn't ready to handle the job. On to bigger and better things at K-State perhaps.KCPowercat wrote: metro...that's what's funny...it was the players but ku fans were all puffy on bowen when as you admit, he didn't have much to do with it

Re: Big 12 Football 2009
well being hired at ksu would be a definite upgrade for him but sadly for him its not happening at a DC level at least...much like all of KU's prior staff, they have to take a job downgrade at another program...lol.
has ku fans turned on gill yet? Well that question is to the few that are actually happy about the hire in the 1st place.

Except Bill Young who went onto Miami after KU. Talk about a downgrade.KCPowercat wrote: well being hired at ksu would be a definite upgrade for him but sadly for him its not happening at a DC level at least...much like all of KU's prior staff, they have to take a job downgrade at another program...lol.

You won't find too many people who aren't happy about the hire. Some were apprehensive at first, but after seeing what he's doing already (bringing in coaches), nearly everyone is on board. I'm very excited about it.

Re: Big 12 Football 2009
I think Bowen is a stand up guy, great with the kids, and has a solid football mind - but his performance as a coordinator level coach was inconclusive at best and it is asking a lot to expect a new HC to keep such a guy around.KCPowercat wrote: funny how ku fans praised bowen 2 years ago.

We'll see what he can do on the field among the big boys. His track record was mediocre in the MAC.kcmetro wrote: You won't find too many people who aren't happy about the hire. Re: Big 12 Football 2009
So, he is bringing in a group of coaches who have been fairly successful with recruiting to higher profile programs than Kansas. Have any of them been successful as coaches? Is Mitchell moving from Illinois under Zook to Illinois under Gill?kcmetro wrote: Except Bill Young who went onto Miami after KU. Talk about a downgrade.

Re: Big 12 Football 2009
This has to be one of the silliest attempts at a backhanded dig I have ever seen. "Ooh look how weak your program is, bringing in coachs who have recruited well but at bigger schools". Would it somehow be more impressive if we were hiring a bunch of dudes who had recruited poorly for programs no one had ever heard of?phxcat wrote: So, he is bringing in a group of coaches who have been fairly successful with recruiting to higher profile programs than Kansas.

How is Illinois any more high profile than KU?phxcat wrote: So, he is bringing in a group of coaches who have been fairly successful with recruiting to higher profile programs than Kansas. Re: Big 12 Football 2009
I meant the Mitchell pickup was a good get for Gill. In addition to that, KSU might hire Clint Bowen, who is also a pretty good recruiter. It would be a good pickup for KSU.KCPowercat wrote: didn't the first sentence say 'good pickup for gill'? In reference to bowen?
