Not surprising at all if they do. Casinos were the final nail in the coffin of an already dying creature.

Re: KCK's Woodlands to close?
They hope that deal could still come.
What would you like to see replace it?

Re: KCK's Woodlands to close?
funny thing kcp, not only was it billed as that, people treated the woodlands the way they now treat legends. just another example of a fad coming and then going.KCPowercat wrote: Man, remember when this place opened? it was billed much like Nascar/legends is currently billed, the savior for KCK.
funny thing too, i still remember those tv ads on in the very early 1990's, showing chefs cooking gourmet food, the upscale class of watching the other races in their club area, the valet service, the gambling payoffs, man, they showed that place on tv like it was churchill downs or something. and now it is set to close.
hehe. 10 years from now, if this forum still exsists, and people still even do internet.......oh well. no need to say it. we all know what is coming.
MU FINISHED THE YEAR RANKED HIGHER IN HOOPS AND FOOTBALL THAN THE KAY U JAYDORKS. UP YOURS KAY U JAYDORK FANS!!!!
Re: KCK's Woodlands to close?
wow, what a shame, the closing of an exurban gambling pit where septagenarians bet their social security checks on the performance of abused animals!
the best thing that ever happened to the woodlands was when rave organizers somehow convinced management to throw probably the largest rave in kc history at the woodlands facility back in 2000. it was ridiculous/awesome.

I don't live in KCK, but it is a part of this metropolitan area (KCK is the third largest city behind KCMO and OP). Given its historic economic puzzle, they've always been willing to off-beat things to turn things around (ie: The Woodlands).
While I'll be the last one to directly compare the amenities and features between The Legends and the Power and Light District, they do serve fundamentally similar purposes: to serve as catalysts for broader development.
It's your prerogative to remain dour on The Legends, and that's fine, but if you're going to claim its just a fad, that fad is just as likely to affect the Power and Light District as well.
Indecision is the root of evil.

they aren't even close to the same type of development.
his point has a basis....suburban power centers have been hot and left after the next big thing comes around.

What about the bbq contest? I think they were getting pretty good traction with developing that. I wonder if someone else will take over promoting it.pstokely wrote: No more Weiner dog races
Much as some folks would hate to admit it, the woodland's demise has nothing to do with its location. It would be in this same position if it were located anywhere in the metro. The Woodland's was built at a time when dog and horse racing were ejoying a fadish boom in popularity nationwide. Now that casinos have become ubiquitous and the fad has fadded- tracks nationwide have struggled as they go back to serving only the die hard fans. Those that would like to think this demise has anything to do with its location in western KCK or that it serves as any sort of barometer for other development out there are fooling themselves with malicious wishful thinking.

Re: KCK's Woodlands to close?
theoretically, this wasn't the kind of place i would want to visit (i get depressed in most gambling establishments). But I do think i'd pay money to see a weiner dog race.... really, just about any strange animal that can run and be raced, i'd want to see... (especially if they gave them little monkey jockeys)...
KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.
Think on the Regional scale.

Re: KCK's Woodlands to close?
What has the Woodlands done for KCK? Absolutely nothing.

You miss my point - they are different types of development - but they serve a similar purpose.KCPowercat wrote: they aren't even close to the same type of development.

Re: KCK's Woodlands to close?
But theirs is inherently better because it's near where they live. Can't you understand that?OPIchabod wrote: You miss my point - they are different types of development - but they serve a similar purpose.
