Good for them and the hard work they went through to get back to this point.

I hope everyone stays invested and keeps the momentum rolling so they do not lose it again. appears Students, staff, and parents are all pulling in the same direction

Part of the reason for Bedell’s departure is because there are so many issues that need to be addressed and fixed that are beyond his and the district’s control.

“The issues that have kept me up many nights are not ones I can solve as superintendent. I’m talking about racism, injustice, a lack of affordable housing, inequitable economic development practices, violence and other systemic issues that cannot be solved in our classrooms alone,” Bedell said.
Was wondering if this meant he was considering running for something. But nope.
Bedell will now head to Maryland for his next job as superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Sad to see him go. Those reasons for him leaving are interesting because I cannot think of anywhere in America he wouldn't be kept awake by them.

The Maryland school district has like 2x+ more students than KCPS. I believe it's a big step up for him and probably more pay.

Closer to six times the size of the KCMO district. My wife works for the Anne Arundel Maryland district and she had no idea the KCMO district was so small. I had to explain to her that it's a tiny district geographically. I guess a lot of people think he will be way over his head with this district, but apparently he is from this area.

On a side note, it's interesting how the school districts out here are all by county which makes them huge and diverse. Montgomery County which is next to Anne Arundel county has like 170,000 students.

Can you imagine if Jackson County had one school district?

There shouldn't be any school districts really. Having districts where some are richer than others causes some kids to have better education than others when all kids should get an equal education. It just systematically makes those in poor families more likely to be poor. Every student should get the same funding regardless and there should be standards and requirements for students in each area.

I was watching Kansas City Week in Review on PBS Friday. They were discussing Bedell leaving. It was stated that there are 6 or 7 school districts in the KC Metro that have more students than KCPSD. After checking, there are actually 8 larger districts in the Metro. There are four larger school districts on the Missouri side of the Metro. The Liberty and Park Hill districts will likely become larger than the KCPSD within a few years with growth in the Northland, so that would make it 6 districts larger than KCPSD eventually.

As the KCPSD shrinks in enrollments, perhaps it could become more manageable and they can spend more time targeting deficiencies.

Another thing mentioned was the likelihood that there would be no public general high school in the southern part of the district -- that Central would be the furthest south. Southeast High School would likely be closed in another downsizing. They made no mention of specialty schools like Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts.

Kansas City Public Schools considers closing 10 schools: 'The status quo is not an option'

Centrol and Northeast high schools among those that could be closed.

Faced with declining enrollment and aging buildings, Kansas City Public Schools is considering closing 10 schools as part of its long-term plan to expand student opportunities.
...
  • Central High School would close in fall 2023 with students transitioning to Southeast High School. Central is recommended for future use as a professional learning center or "swing site" for building relocations during renovations or construction.
  • Northeast High School would close in fall 2026 with students transitioning to East and Southeast High Schools. The building is also recommended for future use as a swing site for building relocations during renovations or construction.
  • James Elementary School would close in fall 2023 with students transitioning to Gladstone Elementary.
  • Longfellow Elementary School would close in fall 2023 with students transitioning to Garcia and Hale Cook Elementary.
  • Troost Elementary would close in fall 2023 with students transitioning to Hartman and Banneker Elementary.
  • Wheatley Elementary would close in fall 2024 with students transitioning to Phillips and Rogers Elementary School.
  • Whittier Elementary would close in fall 2024 with students transitioning to Phillips, Garfield, Rogers and Trailwoods Elementary School.
  • King Elementary would close in fall 2024 with students temporarily transitioning to Hartman, Faxon, Melcher until the opening of a newly constructed King Elementary School in 2026. The existing building is recommended to serve as the future home of Paseo Middle School.
  • Faxon Elementary would close in fall 2026 and merge into the new construction of King Elementary. Faxon Elementary school is recommended for future use as site for the possible relocation for Success Academy K-5 or a possible parent empowerment center.
  • Melcher Elementary would close in fall 2026 and merge into the new construction of King Elementary.[

Can you really celebrate accreditation if the district continues to shrink because no one wants to send their kids there?

Some storied names among the closures. Faxon, Wheatley, Longfellow, Troost -- these are old time schools with histories shared by generations of KC alumni. Not to mention Central and Northeast High Schools.

Back in the 1960s the district should have split into neighborhood governance and dissolved the KCMSD central office and library board. A city tax committee could have distributed funds to each of the HS catchment areas (SW, SE, Paseo, Central, NE, East, Westport, etc.). Local control would have encouraged people with children to move into the district, rather than the "last resort" mentality which pervaded in KCMO for the past fifty years.

The second wave of suburban flight was at least partly caused by the KCMSD.

sad to see some of those legacy schools get closed. But Enrollment is not there. Most people sending their kids to the charter schools or paying for Private schools. Or they live in the area up until Middle School and then move. Its a shame that it has slowly but surely withered on the vine for about 50 years. I'm not sure what the answer is

Yes, it's the roughly the same number of students, but given the population and number of kids going to charter or private schools, it's not even close. KCK school district has a population of around 120,000 and has five high schools.

Fewer school buildings is bad urbanism. There will be kids who walk to school who won't be able to anymore
