Re: Sprint sale rumors again
This paints perhaps a rosier picture of post merger than what I've heard from those still at Sprint/TMO (some internal merger promises not kept) but the important substance is that employment is still about the same as before merger, so far. Both KC and Seattle HQs have about 5K employees each. Might diminish over time but the article points to some promising indicators that TMO may be sticking around in KC, including downtown...

Hopefully Cerner/Oracle will follow with some downtown presence as well.
T-Mobile’s global accelerator program, with tech engineers on the prowl for emergent 5G disruptive technologies, is based at One Kansas City Place in downtown Kansas City’s tallest building.
What emerging technologies?
Brace yourself. The next generation of phone videoconferencing will allow a three-dimensional hologram to pop off your screen.

Sprint had a downtown presence before T-Mobile. Accelerators and HQ offices for Virgin Mobile in One KC Place.

Re: Sprint sale rumors again
We often hear about "KC needs a culture change, the owners here are too bland and do nothing", so when coastal forward-thinking people take over big companies here we get mad? These people are our best shot to get abetter city culture. They will re-engineer the culture here being more forward thinking. You can already see better changes T-Mobile has made here in KC that Sprint never did in 20 years. I'm excited to see the potential from Cerner being controlled by Oracle too.

Yeah have pointed that out before. Hopefully TMO maintains a downtown presence long term and expands.normalthings wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 4:16 pm Sprint had a downtown presence before T-Mobile. Accelerators and HQ offices for Virgin Mobile in One KC Place.

What better changes? TMO' is maintaining same level so far but not seeing any notable signs of 'better' for KC. The intent sounds good on paper though, hopefully they follow through. Pay attention to actions, not promises. Action so far has been maintaining same level, nothing of significance yet. At least same level is better than some losses.AlkaliAxel wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 4:24 pm You can already see better changes T-Mobile has made here in KC that Sprint never did in 20 years.

Re: Sprint sale rumors again
A final test for maintaining local level of employment will be after the entire transition is complete and Sprint legacy systems are merged into TMO. IE, Sprint customers are moving to TMO network but legacy customers are still using Sprint backend systems for account management, etc. At some point that and other underlying Sprinty things will be transitioned. If KC jobs survive that final transition and maintains same level of jobs even if different roles...

I like what they did sprucing up the T-Mobile Center, putting that KC heart sign outside it to take pictures by, their campus is lit up nice with magenta at night now unlike with nothing before. I like these subtle changes they’ve brought in. There’s more flavor to it than the blandness of some of these suburban JoCo bred companies.earthling wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 4:38 pmWhat better changes? Re: Sprint sale rumors again
Tmobile job postings for KC area show about half that can be filled at other TMO locations and about half are specific to KC area, like some IT, Finance and Marketing roles. The long term local employment may be impacted more (good/bad) by where employees choose to live or where skills are found rather than where TMO is directing jobs.
About 320 non-retail full time jobs currently listed for KC area...
https://www.tmobile.careers/job-search/ ... Internship
Compared to about 470 jobs listed in Seattle area, of which also many are available to multiple locations...

Dallas area also a major TMO site as well as significant presence in ATL and DC.

Layoffs...

But gotta hand it to TMO that they have offered plenty of true HQ jobs posted for KC area and the count of total posted jobs not much lower than Seattle area. Many non-HQ postings include multiple hub sites though so may not be filled in KC. So selected candidates end up with more control of where jobs end up even though TMO really does give KC a fair opportunity as a secondary HQ.

Re: Sprint sale rumors again
Probably. Will be interesting to see the local count afterwards. A quick search reports there were about 6K employees in area in 2016, 5500 in 2019 and about 5K in 2021. Probably would be worse with Sprint on its own. Both KC and Seattle areas are pretty balanced around 5K each.
There were about 22K Sprint employees in KC area back in 2002 when local/long distance service and other divisions were still operating.
