Over There Cafe

According the The Star, "Over There Cafe" is set to open inside of Liberty Memorial. I don't know if it is just aimed at the tourists or if they are hoping for local business.

Kind of why I asked - if its just there to sell sodas and cookies to the relatively small amount of museum visitors its kind of hard to picture it more than breaking even. If it was actually going to be a revenue generator, I would think it would need to draw significant local traffic and unless it is a one hell of a special cafe, I don't see that hapening there.DaveKCMO wrote: why introduce more overhead?

I'd have to think its a tourist thing. Maybe they think people will hang around longer if they don't have to leave the premises when they get hungry or the kids start getting antsy. Most museums we've been to have had them, from big ones like the Field in Chicago to Exploration Place in Wichita. And, yes, we've spent money at most of them.

I bet it's going to be very reasonably priced and everything cooked fresh and made to order.

Perhaps it's so they can also have more catered events in the museum as well.

There is a nice article in the paper today about the Café. It is many for the school kids and tourist groups that come thru, but also for a different lunch spot for the area employees to try once in a while since you don’t need a ticket to the Museum to get to it. They have about $750,000.00 in it which is unbelievable but it is what it is. Carl DiCapo has high hopes for it and it does have a few nice touches. When you place your order and go to your table, you get a flag of a country involved in WWI. When your food is ready, they deliver it to your table, kind of like a Planet Sub. They will have the WWI music playing in the background and have some music sheets and lyrics in three different glass panes along one wall. Most things at the Liberty Memorial have been done very well and I don’t think this will be any different.

Anyone else find it kinda tacky to have a theme restaurant inside a memorial to people killed in a war? Can't they just put in a simple cafe or cafeteria? Seems to me like anything in the memorial ought to be reverent.

Putting finishing touches on the cafe on Thursday inside the Liberty Memorial, Cat Buasri (left) and Clark Hurd installed 33 nations’ flags from across the globe. The new cafe, which fills a gap in visitor services, is set to open Saturday.
"Kaiser buns are not on the menu, but just about everything else at a cafe opening Saturday at the Liberty Memorial is steeped in World War I....

Filled doughnuts are "Bismarcks," where I'm from, but I guess that'd be better for a WWII restaurant...
