just wondering who on the forum has a motorcycle. i picked up a goldwing this year and am looking to find folks that wanna go ride. also if you got any good biking stories i would love to hear about them. also would like to hear about any bikes you wished you still had and any close calls with stuff on the hiway or idiot cagers or flying objects or animals you missed or didn't miss.

We have a '96 BMW R1200C. We will have it shipped out to Kansas from NH this June. Back in NH we belonged to a couple of riding groups and would take group rides once a week (mostly to ice cream stands, toys for tots, etc.)

Most of my horror stories involve old ladies running red lights on Broadway...

What year is the Goldwing?

my goldwing is an '82 standard. i call it my little scooter. it's pretty much dwarfed by any modern cruiser or tourer no matter what size motor.

i think it's a bicycle shop.

what model suzuki do you have? the very first bike that i bought was a '72 GT250 2-stroke for $500 when i was 15. it had a windshield, king and queen seat, sissy bar and saddlebags. i took everything off except for the bags because i could get a 12 pack and a bag of ice in each of them. oh yea, it was a screamer.

i also have a couple of honda CB750's in my basement. i think i might just strip them down and sell them piece by piece. they're worth more than if i sold them complete.

OK, for the benefit of the non H-D folks, an "evo" is a style of motor Harley put our between 1984 and 2000.

Some of us still like the old iron - and own a couple of pieces of it.
BTW - all of them have names.

"Agnes" 1987 Sportster, hence the moniker
"Gladys" 1992 Heritage, built to go fast...very fast
"Christine" 2002 Electra Glide Police, the one my wife made me get. (no kiddin)

The motorcycle shop that's at 414 Oak, sharing space with Rudd Clutch, is run by a guy named Mark.

He rebuilt a basket case Yamaha for a friend of mine and did a great job at a very fair price.

I'm actually looking to sell my '75 Honda CB750F. Anybody interested? She's in good repair and runs reliably, amazing for a '75.....

The old CB's are awesome. I had a 75 cb550, but could never get it to idle right. I rebuilt the carbs in a storage room of what is now the coffee lofts. I'm sure people didn't appreciate the gas smell that weekend.

I just got a Suzuki GS750 but it looks like someone put the 850 head/block on it. It's rough but it was cheap. I need to have it checked out real good before I take it riding. I'd love to find a CB750 in pristine condition but most people ask way to much...and they probably get it.

Like the Goldwing, never seen one without the hard saddle bags and big faring. Didn't know they made them like that. Looks pretty clean too.

there were a couple of cb's on k.c. craiglist this week. go to motorcycles and do a search.

goldwings were originally made without a fairing or bags. first year was '75 and first motor was the 1000cc. vetter started making fairings and bags for bikes in the mid 70's and a lot of goldwing buyers started adding them as accessories. in 1979 honda offered bags, but no fairing. in 1980 honda came up with a new model goldwing, the interstate. it came with trunk, bags and a fairing. in '82 they came up with another model goldwing, the aspencade. this was the same as the interstate except it had more options. lots more. the 1100 came out in '79. the 1200 in '84. '84 was also the last year of the standard model. honda now makes an 1800cc model and it has everything but the kitchen sink. really. you can actually get one with an airbag and abs. btw, all honda goldwings since 1981 have been made in marysville, ohio. usa.

i ride a yamaha v-star 1100. and my wife has a Kawasaki vulcan 900. we've had em for a year now. fun as hell, but still taking it slow and learning.

Welcome to life on two wheels!

If you haven't taken "the class" I'd highly recommend you seek out an MSF safety class and take the beginning class at least. I try and take the advanced class at least every other year - just to stay sharp and not fall in to bad riding habits.
HPKC - I'm not "targeting" you, don't get me wrong.
Just a huge believer in increasing motorcyclist's chances of stayin alive. And in this day and age of ear buds, cell phones, blackberries and the SCARIEST thing of all - a carload of teen-age girls, not payin attention.

Don't care what ya ride (motorcycle wise, scooter ain't a motorcycle) just ride safe and within your limits. Start slow, go from there.

ASP? Yeah, they worked on my bike once. They saw/fixed some of the problems it had, but missed the crucially wrong item at the time: the points had worn down.

Side note, here's an entertaining snippet from my blog about that visit to ASP back in 06:

...and successfully completed the ride to the service shop in River Market (the only place anywhere nearby in town that would service and OLD 1975 Honda bike). HOWEVER, the shop was closed. Obviously, because it was 11 o'clock at night. Well, River Market isn't the best part of town. In fact, ASP (the shop) has a barbed wire fence around their parking lot to protect their cars. I was uncertain about leaving my bike down there overnight, both because of the sketchyness and b/c of the impending rain. So after I parked the bike across the street kinda out-of-the-way, I tried to diable my bike a bit in case somebody thought they'd try to hotwire it or something. The steering shaft already locks offset, which is awesome, but I wanted more. I disconnected the battery and started looking for other simple ways to disable it. Finding one, I thought I'd go check the chains on the fence to the lot where the cars were kept; maybe I could find a way to get my bike inside the fence. So I checked them out, the lock seemed secure, no gaps in the fence big enough to matter, so I started walking on to the next gate.

Out of the side of a run down conversion van jumps a man: "Hey man, whatchu think you doin there?" Meet Junior. An apparently illiterate Mexican immigrant. "Nothin man, you work for these ASP guys?" Junior puts his joint in his mouth and flexes his oddly-shaped yet large bicep and points to it "You wantin to come in here and mess with these cars and with me??"

Well, I think you can see how this conversation went for the next 5-10 minutes. Eventually, I get him to let me leave my bike in the lot. We leave a note for the shop owner in the front door and a voicemail on the machine. Junior wants a ten spot for his servicies, and I feel its a good idea to keep this man happy now that I finally got him to be friendly. Particularly since I'm effectively paying him to guard my bike all night. After all that, he's my buddy, makes sure I've got a safe way home, and offers to help beat the sh*t out of anybody who I need shit beaten out of.

I walk briskly to the nearest MAX stop and conveniently hop on and ride back to my car at the parking garage where my bike had previously been. Tomorrow I go in to drop off keys and instructions for the bike and whatnot. I'll be sure to tell them how great a job Junior is doing in guarding the lot. Seriously, he is. Think: rotweiler.

Well, they have my bike. I basically told them to get the horn installed and do an inspection. I told them to check the petcock, a gasket, the fork seals, and see if any adjustments to the steering were needed. (Sorry, not real good with motorcycle terminology put I can point it out with my fingers). Told them to call me before they made any repairs, let me know how much it was going to cost, and I'd let them know what to do.

Dropped it off this morning around 8:00am and haven't heard back yet. I figured it would take at least a day before they could look at it real good.

Anyways, I'll let you know how it goes. The guy that helped me this morning was very nice. I think his name was Ken...

We should start a gang. no Harleys. just old hondas, suzukis, and yamahas. preferably the 4 bangers...

oh yeah, we need to pick out our hang out spot. it can't be a coffee shop on the plaza or winslows.
