KU Med breaks ground on research center
KU Med officials broke ground Friday morning on a $56 million Biomedical
Research Center.
The center in Kansas City, Kan., will be an important addition to the
area's life sciences initiative.
Construction of the center is the centerpiece of a $125 million building
boom on the medical center campus. The 205,000-square-foot center will
give KU Med an opportunity to build on existing expertise in
neuroscience, cancer research, human reproductive biology and genomics.
Construction of the facility is funded by a $27 million grant from the
Hall Family Foundation and bonds approved by the Kansas Legislature.
Also on Friday, the KU Medical Center Research Institute marked the
reopening of the Biotechnology Development Center of Greater Kansas
City. The 6,000-square-foot building on the KU Med campus will provide
seven labs and office space for promising start-up companies.
Thomas Noffsinger, executive director of KMCRI, said the renovated
incubator is a vital tool in commercializing local research.
