Had some great lentil soup at Pangea on 39th last nite.  That with their fresh fried in garlic and olive oil potato chips. Plus some pumpkin stuffed ravioli.

If they run it out of of Lil's, I wonder if you can pick it up instead of delivery.

I've been enjoying their soup for a few weeks now. Great soups and the owner/operator Todd seems like a real nice guy. The first time I was home when he dropped some soup off,  he said he and his wife almost bought our house when it was on the market a few years ago. I'm glad they passed on it and we scooped it up!

Anyway...all you downtown/crossroad dwellers take notice!!!!!

You can now pre-order online and pick up at the following location on Saturdays.  You HAVE to pre-order.

Lill's On 17th
815 West 17th St

Todd Schulte is a bit weary of the reaction many people have when they first learn about his calling.

“Oh, you’re the ‘Soup Nazi,’ ” is the response he usually hears when he talks about making homemade soups for his Happy Soup Eater.

“Yeah, I make soup like the Soup Nazi, but I’m not mean; I don’t want to deny people soup,” he dryly replies.

The “Seinfeld” TV show character is known for his “no soup for you” shout when customers displease him.

Not the very laid-back Schulte. The former executive chef at Joe D’s Winebar-Cafe & Patio and former fishmonger for Seattle Fish Co. has been making, selling and delivering homemade soups for about a year.

Now customers can come to him.

Schulte hopes to open Happy Gillis Cafe & Hangout in the former SORedux spot at 549 Gillis St. in the next couple of weeks. Of course, his soups will be featured as part of a changing menu that could include Tuscan zucchini with potato and pine nuts, red beet gazpacho, Italian lentil with sausage, caramelized onion and fennel, and old-fashioned chicken noodle.

He also plans to sell such items as panini, blueberry muffins, smoky chickpea spread, egg salad, grilled steak sandwich with tomatoes and Maytag blue cheese, and romaine salad with lemon garlic dressing.

And he will have the “pink plate special,” a nod to his wife, who wanted to paint the walls hot pink. Instead, Schulte selected pale green with white tiles. The hot pink does show up in another part of the restaurant.

One preopening visitor described the decor — with its mismatched kitchen tables and chairs — as “early marriage, late garage sale.”

I picked up soup last weekend and it was fantastic.

Chatted a bit and he said the cafe should be open in a few weeks.  Can't wait for it.

We've been enjoying this place all week. Food is good, service is friendly, and "hangout" fits this place perfectly.

I think this will finally bring in a feeling of community to the neighborhood (if that makes sense). I've been living in Columbus Park for almost 2 years, and it's been very "clickish". It's good to meet some neighbors for the first time after two years....

I went in today - the breakfast options were limited, but the taste (and price) was fantastic.  Its good to see a nice, community type place in this space again - similar to tasty box in many respects.  I hope this place fares better!

No. Round-eye whitey named Todd. A very good, talented and nice guy.

This place rocks. I can't think of anything we needed more in the neighborhood. Good food, good atmosphere, good prices. I highly recommend it. Everything I've had so far has been excellent.

Todd is the man. I'll be bringing my family down for a visit soon. Glad he finally got the place opened up!

I asked because a lot of Asian-run restaurants in NYC have "Happy" in the name of the place.

Happy Peking
Happy Duck
Happy Panda
Happy Dumpling
Happy Luck
Happy Wok
Happy Noodle
Happy Kung Fu
Happy Jade
Happy Garden
Happy Family
Happy World
Happy Dim Sum
Happy Sing
Happy Canton House
Happy Wo Hop
Happy Hip Hop Chow
Happy Taco
etc.
